The question is, was the Garden always Black or was it made that way later?

That is a very interesting idea. Dredgen Yor had a gun called the Rose before he became "corrupted" by the Darkness and recieved the Thorn. Once you destroy the Heart of Darkness rose petals fall from the sky. It states in the grimoire that the Traveler created the Garden, not the Black Garden, so it could have been "corrupted" by the Darkness.

Yeah, and once you destroy the Heart doesn't Ghost say something like "The Traveler is coming back to life"? (I paraphrase) . And I haven't seen the Traveler do shit since.
