What leads you to believe our characters are "pre-traveler discovery" I never got that impression. The collapse happened centuries ago, guardians have been around for a while by the time the game starts. Awoken could have easily returned to earth when they failed to escape, and then died there to be resurrected later. The only odd thing I see is why did it take them hundreds of years to figure out you could weild the light. One crazy idea I have is that light is actually souls. Your ghost is literally that, YOUR SOUL. Captured by the traveler when earth was attacked, that's why it has to find you specifically, why you don't remember anything, why he knows everything etc. He's a disembodied you and the flesh is just a puppet.

That is creepily plausable... Would explain Ghost's triumphant "Ah, I found you" in the opening. Always wondered why he was looking for ME specifically.
