It doesn't break the game lore, cause, unfortunately, much like the rest of the story you have to go into the grimoire to understand everything. In the awoken grimoire card it describes how awoken who abandoned the reed to go to live and fight on earth will find no special treatment from awoken of the reef.

.. but several in-game characters imply that your character wasn't around during or after the Collapse, so you'd have existed pre-Collapse. The OP's entire point is that Awoken did not exist pre-Collapse, but our characters did.. so how can our characters be Awoken?

Because Ghosts did not exist until the Dark Age which was Post Collapse. Awoken came into being DURING the Collapse. Awoken have been around longer then Ghosts.
