Since when are we pre-Golden Age?
I always assumed that we died during the Collapse and have found no evidence to either confirm or contradict this.

I assumed that guardian's do not retain their former memories hence that smug ghost having to explain literally everything

When did any of us Guardians die? Good question. I think Bungie wants us to answer that on our own. Part of the make your own story thing. So let me ask you this. What great battle of the past did you die in? What courageous deeds did you preform? They must be very noble and brave considering a ghost that it was worth bringing you back from the dust. Forged in light to shine in the plethora of darkness.

Exactly this. My interpretation is that we were Guardians who fought and died during the Collapse.
