Maybe it was preparing us for this inevitability because the hive had already infiltrated our planet if you remember from game play. its like war of the worlds were the ships came out of the ground.

The Hive ships are called Seeders. They don't come out of the ground. They get dropped and smash into the ground and then the Hive dig. Hence the burrows and caves. They could have infiltrated previously I suppose but I think they are tactic is like a virus. Attack fast and together creating new using death and destruction to create new Hive along the way.
