So, I'm thinking of replaying Terraria

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from... Er, Terraria. Hm.. Well, that's a rather boring intro, isn't it? Anyhow, the other day I was looking for something a little mindless to do, so I booted up Terraria, and hopped on with my maxed out dude with his little drill pod, and went and started mining away the Corruption for funsies. Somehow I managed to still miss 7% Corruption, and gave up, but after doing so I kinda felt like playing Terraria again. If you know anything about me, you could probably guess that when I play Terraria I play as a mage. I always play as a mage in everything! However, I don't really care to play the same Terraria again, and so if I do decide to replay it again, I think this time I'd rather try a new class! Now, I could go ranged, and that would be all fine and dandy; the ranged weapons always looked neat, but I was actually thinking of going melee!
As a small side note, it's such a shame summoner never got fully fleshed out. It's come a long way from when it was first introduced, but imo it still doesn't feel like a class on the same level as the other three. Though, who knows, I could be wrong. Maybe one day I'll have to give that a go, too.
As I thought about going melee, though, a thought crossed my mind; is going pure melee even viable? In the late game, most "melee" weapons shoot out projectiles anyway, bit I was curious: is it even viable to go pure melee in the early game? "Pure" meaning only using melee weapons--no ranged, magic, or summon weapons at all. For regular enemies, this seems easy enough, but Terraria's bosses don't ever particularly feel like they're made with melee combat in mind. So, I know there are a few Terraria fans around here, have any of you played a pure melee build? Is it actually viable early game, or would it just be kind of obnoxious? Tl;dr? Here's my point! Is going pure melee viable in early-game Terraria? That's no ranged, magic, or summon weapons at all? How do you do it, exactly, as bosses all feel very ranged-oriented. I'm thinking of trying it, but only have experience with going mage, so tips/tricks, good weapons, and all that good stuff is appreciated. But that's all for now folks! Jambuhbye!

Well, far from being the challenge I was anticipating, melee is apparently easy mode, actually. The first thing I did was find the Corruption and make an Ebonwood sword, which had high enough damage to last me until I found an Ice Blade. Usually when I play mage, Ice Blade is my backup for when I'm out of Mana, so I was expecting its damage against the Eye to be lackluster. It was not, actually, and Ice Blade easily took out both the Eye of Cthulhu and Eater of Worlds. My build for a little bit became Ball O' Hurt for close range, and Ice Blade for long range, which handled a Goblin invasion. This is what I went into the jungle with, and then swapped out the Ball O' Hurt for Blade of Grass, which took care of the Queen Bee and got me Bee Keeper. I personally don't go to the Floating Islands until I get Honeyed Goggles, so I farmed Queen Bee for a bit, using Blade of Grass for long range, and Bee Keeper for short range. Once I got Honeyed Goggles, Starfury replaced Blade of Grass, though I took on most of the dungeon using Bee Keeper. Masamune then replaced Bee Keeper for a little while, but the next step was the Underworld, which meant I got Night's Edge pretty quickly after that. I was expecting to have a little bit of trouble with the Wall of Flesh, but Night's Edge took it out really easy. Like, *really* easy. I went into the fight without a hellbridge for funsies, 100% expecting to die, and then kicked its butt. I am now in Hard Mode, with Night's Edge, which is still demolishing everything. Either the latest update made the game easier, melee is broken, or I just got way better at gaming since I last played, because I don't recall ever having this easy of a time on my mage characters. Perhaps I had it backwards, though, where melee characters excel in early game, and struggle in late game? I dunno, we'll see! Edit: Post WoF was actually a little bit of a roadblock. There are a few options to upgrade to next, namely Bananarang, Shadowflame Dagger, or Ice Sickle, but all of them either rely on luck (waiting for Blood Moon invasion), or a lot of grinding (namely, Ice Sickle). I tried going for the upgraded Ice Blade (whatever it’s called) but was never lucky enough to get an Ice Mimic, so I wound up using Bananarang for the mech bosses. After that, the obvious next choice for weapons is True Night’s Edge & True Excalibur, which made short work of Plantera. I like that there’s a reason to have both on your person, now, when I last played you kinda just chose your favorite. Obviously next step is Terra Blade, which requires a Solar Eclipse, so to the temple it is! Edit 2: Yes, I am continuing to catalogue my adventure, mostly because I'm bored! The next step was indeed Terra Blade. I did the Solar Eclipse in the Corruption, and lucky me I got a Corruption Key! This made me very happy, as Scourge of the Corrupter is actually one of my favorite weapons. Like, I love Scourge of the Corrupter so much that I wish it was a spell so I could use it on my favorite class. I wasn't actually expecting to get to use it, so that I do is good fun. Scourge has been my go-to for single-targets, while Terra Blade is my go-to for crowds. With the Scourge/Terra Blade combo, Golem was--predictably--no problem. As I was handling a Blood Moon I accidentally triggered an alien invasion. No new weapons, but I got the UFO. This is way earlier than I usually do the martian stuff, and yet I had a very easy time, so I'm fairly certain melee is indeed easy mode. Also I got a thing to turn into a wolf. Not a werewolf, just a wolf. It counts as a mount, and it is the best thing ever, I love it. Next is Pumpkin Moon & Frost Moon. I'm curious whether Horseman's Blade will wind up in my moveset--I've heard conflicting things about how good it is. Edit 3: I actually hit a bit of a roadblock going for Pumpkin Moon and Old One's Army 3. Turns out, that was because my next step was actually Martian Invasions. I'm used to Pumpkin Moon being after Golem, because that used to be the endgame. Regardless, I got the Influx Waver from the Invasion, which gave me the edge I needed in Pumpkin Moon and Old One's Army 3. I actually lost the Old One's Army thing, but I did still beat Betsy and got Flying Dragon, so -blam!- cares? :p One small detail I really like is that the Terra Blade is the strongest sword that's from Terraria, but they still needed to add new, stronger weapons. The solution was that there are stronger swords in the game, but they all come from space, or another dimension, which is good fun. Edit 4: Got 3 Christmas Tree Swords on my first Frost Moon, but I don’t think I’m replacing anything. Forgot about Duke Fishron & Empress of light, and triggered the Celestial junk early. I think I’m gonna sell everything I got from it, then tackle Fishyman & Faerie Lady first. But also I got a little bored and wound up starting a new character for magic Expert Mode, because farming for Truffle Worms is a pain. I hope Duke Fishron or Empress drops some good melee weapons for Moon Lord, though. Solar gear wasn’t quite cutting it, but we’ll see.

  • Few months ago I got back into it again, I tried to do ranger or mage or summoner, but like always I went straight for Nights Edge and sprinkled magic, miniguns, and summons.
I stopped though cause I got bored and the friends I was playing with finished the game over night and then modded their servers cause they’re PC players. (Last time I was on, we defeated Duke Fishron? Now there was a stressful fight.)
Lotta changes since I last played too. Mobile got an interesting update and you can’t search for recipes, but I got over it after I fixed some of the jank settings. I can’t remember if console is caught up with mobile and pc or not… But yeah, melee works. I think I’ve fought at least one boss (EoC) with just melee cause I forgot to switch around. Good enough armor and the right amount of healing and distance management can do wonders. There is that temporary immunity trinket, but I think that’s from mimics in Hardcore Mode. Nights Edge isn’t too hard to make though, and its ingredient weapons are pretty strong on their own anyways. Just needs boss arena platforms for reach/flight reset.

I've never tried full melee, but it should be possible, especially on the latest versions. I don't know what system you play it on, but if it is the same version as pc, there are some decent early game swords. Any sword with autoswing is a plus, and some like the enchanted sword do shoot projectiles. The Night's Edge is also better on the current version since it does have a ranged attack. As for your corruption world, there should be a biome sight potion now, which makes corrupted blocks glow.

        • Terraria was fire until they jacked up the controls on mobile. That was frustrating and ruined the game for me.
