I've never tried full melee, but it should be possible, especially on the latest versions. I don't know what system you play it on, but if it is the same version as pc, there are some decent early game swords. Any sword with autoswing is a plus, and some like the enchanted sword do shoot projectiles. The Night's Edge is also better on the current version since it does have a ranged attack. As for your corruption world, there should be a biome sight potion now, which makes corrupted blocks glow.

 • A lot of early game ones don't at least on the main versions of the game (pc and console).

 • I was thinking about some of the projectile swords, but, like, at that point is there even a reason to keep going melee? None of the early game ones will match the ranged damage of guns/spells. :p I didn’t know Night’s Edge fires a projectile now, though. That’s pretty swell. Excalibur too, or does that one still need to be upgraded first? That biome sight potion sounds potentially useful, I’ll have to look into that if I ever decide to finish up my no corruption world.

 • Excalibur's special effect now basically increases the attack range. As for damage, it really depends on if you get the right armors and accesories along with the reforging at the goblin tinkerer. The shadow armor if you have a corruption world increases speed and critical strike chance. The molten armor increases melee damage, speed, and critical strike chance.

 • Haha, I know about the melee boosting armors. I ain't no noob. :p I was more just meaning, don't the early-game melee weapons have cooldowns on their projectiles? I know at least the early-early ones do. I suppose that's part of the fun of trying a different class, though--not knowing all my weapon options, and which ones are good! The new beefed up Night's Edge sounds like it's good enough for the Wall of Flesh, and the shooting star sword could probably be good against Skellyman. I'm not too concerned about the Eater of Worlds, because, well, Eater of Worlds, which funnily enough leaves me the most at a loss for the Eye of Cthulhu. The ice sword is the only one that comes to mind, but that thing's projectile cooldown is so slow. I'm interested to see Excalibur's new effect, though. I may just have to see if I have a spare one lying around on one of my old worlds. There's obviously been some big update since I last played. I actually wasn't aware of any update, until I booted up one of my old worlds and the Princess moved in.
I like to have fun with my buildings, and the only spare room I had available was actually a secret room I built underground at a small inn I set up in the Purity biome. I believe it was the Tavernkeeper and the Golfer who lived here, but that part's not important. The part that is important, is that this secret room is one of those ones where all the lights and entrances are wired up to a switch, so if you don't know it's there, you're not going to realize it's there until you flip the switch. When you do, I styled the room as some sort of secret Corruption laboratory. I thought about building the Princess her own house, but then I realized her living in this secret lab is funnier. Either, this means she's some evil sorceress, using the inn as a cover to plot some evil plan involving the Corruption, or the Tavernkeeper kidnapped the princess and is keeping her trapped underground in his secret Corruption laboratory, probably planning on turning her into a monster or something. I don't know which version of this I like better, but either way, I decided to leave her there. :p[/sploiler]

 • Yeah, a lot of the early ones tend to have a longer amount of time between projectiles, though some of them, like the ice sword, are really slow. Although, regardless of what you end up finding works best for you, I would still recommend getting the enchanted sword I mentioned since it is a material for the strongest sword in the game.

 • If I happen to come across the Enchanted Sword, that’d be cool, but I don’t world-hop until the game is completed, so unless I get lucky chances are I won’t get it. Which is fine. Zenith is pretty useless as anything but a trophy—a trophy I already have on my main file.

 • I believe you can get it from golden crates from fishing.

 • Can you? That's pretty neato. Is that a newer thing, because I don't recall that being a thing in the past. Still, nothing I'd go out of my way for, but fishing is usually a part of my Terraria runs, as I need all those fancy fish for my potions, so if I happened to get it that'd be neat.
