Because if auto rifles had a buff every single weapon class would be balanced.
Thorn can already be countered by multiple exotics.

I don't understand why everyone keeps bringing up auto rifles. They don't have anything to do with it. Thorn is not countered by any other exotics except tlw at very close range

Red death destroys thorn. Vex and last word destroy it mid-life range. Mida beats it easy long range. Also when ARs were at their prime nobody complained about thorn and other exotics.
