It's not really "rare". You can get 6 per week with 3 characters in ToO. The silver and gold package guarantee you one (without achieving flawless). Problem is: not everyone is good enough to get them.
Also I don't see grinding in an MMO as a flaw. MMOs are MADE for grinding on many ends.
Also Destiny can be played casually like no other game. As an MMO it's not even in-depth. Raids are simple, PvP is made for so everyone can win, basic activities can be played via matchmaking.
Let me get this straight: a casual player obviously is casual cauz he plays the game in a more less serious style. So a casual wouldn't be interested in end-game content cauz he knows "it's too hard for me". So for what would a casual need etheric light for? It's your access to end-game content, and not meant for something a casual can gain in two minutes via glimmer grinding.
Remember what I said about the ToO above? Exactly, it's not casual. You need 2 good people. Active Destiny PvP players (= non casual players). So therefore the etheric light is guaranteed here. ToO and Arena above 28 is End-game content, as Bungie stated and therefore only real dedicated, non casual players, are rewarded.
It's content for people who simply don't play this game in a casual way.
Bungie actually could have skipped the whole etheric light stuff. No one would need it cauz we can simply buy 42 gear from Varik. But letting us upgrade old legendary stuff was just a bonus, for everyone who is willimg to put time (= grind) into this game.
As a side note: players completed the 34 arena with a group of 33 and no Gjiallarhorns. Of course a casual couldn't do that.
The game is casual and core like any other game and I don't really understand why so many people think that Destiny is different from any other FPS or MMOs in general just because it's from Bungie or so.
You can even play WoW in a casual way which of course, restricts you from end-game content (as long as you don't join a guild or so). Destiny has many problems, I agree in this point (RNG etc), but the way the end-game currently works is balanced.

Casual gamers can be very skilled and capable gamers. Casual more often means a persons life, job and family limits there game time IMO. Assuming every casual gamer has no skills is way off base.

Edited by GalaxySpider: 6/1/2015 1:26:12 PMThere are skilled casuals, yes. But that wasn't what I said. The main problem is the time investment. And even the ToO are somehow time consuming IF you lack in personal skill to compete with your opponents. And most of the time a casual don't want to invest that time. There are always exception, but these exceptions have no meaning when you look at the whole picture. If developers would take any possible type of gamer (and every sub-type following the criteria) in consideration then no game in the world could find a balance between those groups. And Destiny is doing that just fine. It doesn't lock away players from content. Players are locking themselfes out from it. When I read "we have lifes etc" (as an example) then ok, that's fine. But if you don't have time etc then what's the point of eveb starting a time consuming (and difficult) activity? Everything end-game related in Destiny falls under that formula. Hardcore players get rewarded for dedication. The broad mass of casuals not. That's a natural thing in the gaming world and will never change. Both groups can enjoy the game. If you want more, a game wants more from you in exchange.
