For once, I have to agree with IGN(orant).
I understand why Bungie made Etheric Light so rare, and it's a two-fold reason.
1) They didn't want everyone hitting 34 in the first week. (Understandable)
2) The rarity is a delicate balance. Just rare enough that it entices you to play more, but not so rare that it seems to be like a second job in order to get even one piece of Etheric Light.
Unfortunately (as with the rest of the game until present), Bungie has no idea about how to properly balance the grind vs. reward ratio. They've hit the latter part of point 2. They've made the Etheric Light so rare that it is far too difficult and offered in far too little activities with far too little of a drop chance. They've made it such a chore to get, that for many people it is killing the drive to play now.
There's plenty of people in my situation. I've played for two weeks now and still haven't seen a single piece of Etheric Light drop.
Now; there are plenty of people who have three 34's, all weapons upgraded, and Etheric Light to spare. But Bungie missed the target audience on this one (unless their target audience is between the ages of 12-16, out of school with 16 spare hours to grind out that much Light...). Most people don't have the 10-12 hours at a pop to grind out Etheric Light to get all of their equipment upgraded in a week. Hell, most people don't even have that kind of free time on the weekends.
A possible fix would be to keep the guaranteed Etheric Light "gift" of the 34 and 35 Prison of Elders, but add in a drop chance for the small chests at the end of the 28 and 32 Prison runs. Increase the chance for a drop for the Nightfall and the Crucible (hell, add in a chance for a drop in the Crucible) as well as the Iron Banner once it starts up again. An increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent along with the additional places to get it would make the grind much less agonizing overall, and would have the added effect of making people want to play more than they do now.
Making the Etheric Light the carrot at the end of the stick is one thing. But you've got to use a shorter stick. nobody will want the carrot if they can't even see it at the end of the stick.
As it stands right now, there's nothing in sight to chase after, and it just kills the desire to play.
Edit 1 (of what will probably be the first of several edits...): I fully know where to currently get Etheric Light, that's not the issue. the issue is the time it takes to get even one piece. Most people only have 2-3 hours to play per night. Therefore, most people find it very difficult to "do everything in all characters per week" like you kids on summer break are getting more than twelve hours to accomplish.
Edit 2: PvP isn't everyone's strong-suit, nor is so easy as "git gud skrub". Those of you who say "it's a cakewalk to go 9-0 in the trials and get 3 EL per character per week" should probably quit talking. You're only making yourselves look ignorant, not like the PvP-gods you think you are.
Edit 3: ironBill posted this, and he clarifies the intent of this post nicely.
FWIW, I couldn't care less about getting through ToO. Really, I'm finding I don't care about hitting 34 on all characters either. No point to it. Just so we know who we both are.
The OP is talking about play balance, and whether or not Bungie is hitting their market, which I happen to find is a great point. Who IS the demographic? Are they trying for a very select subset of skills to reward this time around? Sure seems that way. Good PvP players are strutting around like they invented fire... happy for 'em too I guess, but if that's all this DLC is intended to give us, my question follows - is that all there is to this?
Edit 4: Calling me a "scrub" doesn't do anything as I really don't care. All you're doing by slinging names like that is highlighting the lack of strength in your argument.
Edit 5: pablogordon had another great idea. I've quoted it here to give it some love.
There should have been an exchange rate at the speaker for Etheric light. Baffling really that it's not there.
Make it really expensive. The most expensive thing in the game currently is that ship from Petra at what, 17.5k glimmer? Make the Etheric light cost that plus one each of the radiants, and ten each of the ascendants, and some coins and motes for good measure. The speaker exchange was a very good step in the right direction to sinking some currencies, especially Friday when Xur sold the helm engrams and now that most everyone has a couple few weapons they want to re-roll.
Why not just add the Etheric light? If we are really honest, the point isn't just hitting max anymore (and thankfully so) but putting together a setup with both the perks and looks that suit your play style!
Edit 6: And, here's a link for why the PoE loot system is broken in general, but parallels well with the rarity of Ethereal Light.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/05/28/destinys-prison-of-elders-has-a-serious-loot-problem/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix
Edit 7: FatChubbE offers a very good breakdown of what the responsible adult Gamer deals with in trying to overcome the base design of this DLC. It is an accurate description, and props go to him for it.
The adults I play this game with aren't always on. Three are full time Grad students with jobs, two are parents with wives and kids. My son plays between school and football practice and games when he's not doing chores or homework. The full time gamers in my clan have all partnered up, so getting help from them is difficult. The "it's easy" comments applies only to those with spare time. We did one nightfall and one 32 prison of elders. That's all we had time for. Don't get me wrong, the etheric light is there. It's obtainable. But it's not obtainable "easy". Easy when applied to time spent obtaining does not bode well for the working/school demographic. It applies only to destiny players who play destiny for hours on end every day. To put it into perspective we did (two) ToO matches. that's right 2. We were not in control of the time. With loading, and 5 round matches, two matches took an hour. If you do 8 and win flawlessly without the other team winning a single point, 3 hours at least grinding for an etheric light. If you add a 34 or 35 prison of elders and you're a super stud team that's another 2 hours with loading, game time, running back to the airlock. And 2 hours is giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're really really good. If you're average, add at least another hour or two. So the argument that it's "easy" is a matter of perspective. Easy as far as skill level? Or easy as a matter of "I got all the time I need to play?" Either way, getting etheric light takes more time than any other currency we've been offered thus far. That's just how it is. People took days off to play this. Which kind of gives you an idea of the commitment to time you have to invest to receive these "easy" rewards.
Edit 8: IIFormer GamerII also has a great take on the time sink necessary and the base design of these DLC.
You are without a doubt correct when it comes to grinding through the same content three times over in Destiny, and the annoyances, redundancy, sheer boredom, and time consumption that comes along with it. After playing through the base game and TDB I've come to realize that destiny simply isn't a game that can be played causally, and if you attempt to do so you should be prepared to put yourself at an extreme disadvantage. This was my main reason for intentionally skipping out on HoW, because I knew that the never ending grind would continue.
If you have a lot of spare time on your hands, Destiny is a great game to play with clan mates. But truth be told you cannot simply play destiny in a casual manner such as battlefield or call of duty, without hindering your progression dramatically and being seen as a "slacker," "leech," or a "freeloader."
Destiny's new loot looks nice, but I just can't take the grind anymore.
Edit 9: To all the people telling us that not everyone should be able to get to end-game content, or that parts of the game should be locked except for the "hardcore" crowd: So having entire portions of the game locked out to a player simply for no other reason than Bungie feeling the need to promote elitist alienation of their player base... is ok?
The only thing more wrong than Bungie's "philosophy" are the people who jump at any chance to support it.

Edited by ofaDyingStar: 8/28/2015 5:08:29 AMI've played almost 200 hours and I've only just got enough etheric light and armour cores to get two characters to level 34. I got one etheric light from a nightfall, and the rest from PoE. I would be all for a slight increase in getting it. Or even just a chance at getting it from more locations. I do like the grind, but I'd love to get some of my favourite weapons fully upgraded before TTK drops. Edit: I don't usually get much of a chance to play weekends so I can't do the trials.
-
I think it's unfair that I can get 9 etheric light a week but the players who are poor at multiplayer can't get anything near that. It's pretty ridiculous. PoE should reward you with much more than ToO. I have over 40 Etheric Light.
-
They are?? I have 5 just gathering dust in the vault.

AGREED..picked this game back up when a friend bought it and find it ABSURD they are still trying to force people into their NOOBISH pvp where one hit weapons and supers reign supreme....pvp in destiny is so dumb and is for people with ADHD....no wonder they have to try to force people into it...the fact that to get to level 34 you HAVE to play pvp just goes to show the lack of development and thought process this game truly has to offer...they obviously dont have the player base in PVP they thought they would have...but forcing people into it ISNT the way to go..obviously 1 hit weapons/super noob fest PVP isnt that appealing to most PVPers. Doesnt take that much skill when you think about it....lol and I actually heard this kid say, "im a god sniper in destiny"...ROFL..i said to him, "haha, who isnt?"....it literally takes no skill. Such weak development...might just have to tell this friend to continue on with out me..reminded of just how stupid of a grind this game is after just 1 week...yes every game has SOME grind..but THIS game...man, WTF...lol. IS this free 2 play?

I never thought etheric light was hard to get. I like how there are set ways to get etheric light as opposed to %100 rng. What is so hard about getting either friends together or going on a lfg site and getting into a group for a 34 poe, a decent pvp team for iron banner, or even blatantly asking for a carry in trials. You get etheric light from simi end game content to end game content. If your not interested in end game content then what do you even need etheric light for then. You dont need to be 34 with 365 weapons to run pvp, patrols, bounties, story missions, or even raids.
-
I'd really like to see Bungie address why they made it take so much time and effort to obtain etheric light. And I'm curious about what the numbers are for players who have a lot of etheric light vs players who have none or next to none. Lots of good thoughts in here despite the childish responses of some.

I couldn't even read your post, because the title is not even close to true and everyone saying these are too rare are scrubs. There's 6 a week, get over it
-
I think once you hit 34 with crappy PoE gear (should take 3 weeks at most) , ethric light will be an easy three per week. I think that's a pretty fair balance considering you need it for weapons as well as whatever armor you want to level up
-
You wrote a whole story to say that it's rare. I have 10 and don't even know what to gear or weapons to use them on already.
-
Iron banner l; 2 opportunities, ToO; 2 opportunities + lighthouse opportunity, PoE; 2 opportunities, Nightfall; 1 opportunity, that is 1 character. Times 3 makes 24 possible lights a week... rare how?
-
It's not rare, just do lvl 34 PoE each week on all characters. It's easy.

Great post. I like the overall game play, but will ditch Desitny the second something new with the same type of playability without the grind comes out. The way I see it, Bungie is only opening the market for another developer to come in and take advantage of this dissatisfaction. I don't play with other people - having to go to an outside web service just to find people to play with is ridiculous to begin with and locking the game's best rewards to people who either have a group they play with consistently (try doing that when your out of high school), or go through these sites to get a group together is just too cumbersome. I wouldn't have such a big problem with the rarity of etheric light if there were a way to meet/talk to people in game, without having to join a party or have a ton of random people as friends. But adding the grind to get etheric light to the already painful fact that I can't access the cool stuff because I can't schedule my life around my gaming is just too much. Love the game - won't get the next expansion, won't buy the next version unless this this is addressed - and if something comparable comes out in the meantime, well... goodbye titan, goodbye hunter, and goodbye warlock I never had...

Welcome to an mmo style game, with hardcore PvP and raiding in mind. Bungie isn't going to give you everything that you want, nor do you deserve it. You have to earn it by putting hours and hours into their game. If you don't have the time that sucks cause you don't deserve it, you aren't the demographic that gets end game content. That's a personal problem, not a destiny problem. It's not on bungie to give you gear because you don't play a lot. If you want stuff in the game earn it. Besides grinding for all that shit to buy one from the speaker takes longer than earning one anyways. It's all about game time, and if you can't hang then you don't deserve the best things in the game and that's facts. People really need to stop complaining and play another game if they can't handle this. Seriously.
-
I like it that way. It makes playing the game fun and rewarding.
-
I haven't even got one yet. Cause there is no way to matchmake with other players for endgame activities that include them.

Great post and I totally agree with you. And here's the thing, I actually am one of the people who can play a lot each day, and I still haven't seen a single etheric light drop, because I'm not level 34 yet to get it from PoE, nor do I have any desire to play ToO. So that means, until my friends and I are level 34, the only method of getting it is nightfalls and iron banner. The issue with that is that the drop rate from Nightfalls is abysmally low, so low in fact that myself and an alarming number of people are 9 nightfalls into HoW and still haven't seen a single EL drop. And even when IB comes around, you'll only be able to buy two of them per character, and frankly, I'm not grinding out to rank 5 on three characters, even with the new reputation boost. So that means I can reliably get 2 EL per month, whereas people who can grind the highest levels of PoE and play ToO all weekend have so much of it that they literally don't know what to spend it on. And when you get right down to it, this DLC sucks for solo players. If you're not the kind of person who can easily organize teams of people to do all the grinding with you, you are just straight up out of luck. The two main methods of getting EL require pre-made teams. With this DLC, Bungie took one of Destiny's greatest weaknesses (a lack of matchmaking for end-game content) and only made it worse. For a company that practically invented matchmaking on consoles, they sure do seem to be terrified of putting it in Destiny. Honestly, let's just cut the bull crap. EL should be a guaranteed drop from nightfalls, in addition to whatever your other reward is, and it should also drop from level 32 PoE. And it should start having a chance to drop from crucible and dragon strikes, as well as level 28 PoE. Now I know there will be plenty of snotty little elitists who will claim that that would make EL too easy to get, and that you shouldn't be able to get max everything in the first couple weeks (funny though that despite this argument they were all level 34 on day 2). But I want them all to ask themselves this: were ascendant materials ever this difficult to obtain? It's not like you HAD to play VoG to get ANY ascendant materials at all. I've never set foot in that raid, yet I got all the ascendant materials I could ever want from nightfalls, daily heroics, public events, faction packages, engrams, and dismantled legendaries. They were NEVER exclusive to end-game content. EL shouldn't be either. The whole point of the new ascension system was to simplify the process, remove the grind, and allow players to equip any armor that had either the look or the perks they wanted, rather than being forced to use one set of end-game gear just to be max level. Instead they only added even more grind that actually requires you to have and use 3 characters a week to ascend at any reasonable rate, added yet another barrier to entry for end-game activities, and are forcing some players to use a set of armor that comically enough has a 100% pure strength roll. It's just a mess right now.

Edited by Guffmuffin: 6/8/2015 4:21:41 PMBump bumpitdy dumb bump, bump bump. I've deleted 3 level 34 characters this week due to how frustrating the Etheric Shite chasing has turned out to be. 800+ hours of play, and you frustrate me to the point of deleting all my characters and loot, is that your intention? So so so fed up with how Bungie constantly try and strong arm players into PvP. Bungie, you really do need to stop trying to force your customers, who do not like PvP, into PvP just to be cannon fodder for those players who do wish to invest the time into getting good at it. This all started with the mandatory Exotic Bounty elements that require doing PvP, how hard would it be to give players the choice? Just stop it, that is all.
-
You have too much spare time to write this. P.S. I have gotten 6 eteric light in 1 week.
-
You are right sir. I am in the same boat with this god damn game
-
I agree it's hard for me being on deployment don't get but maybe and hour to play if that sometimes don't play for weeks and it's hard for me to keep up with those who have time to play
-
I totally agree with everything said here. The fact that it's so difficult to obtain is largely what makes it not fun to play for.
-
You are a noob scrub that needs to git gud. Or git lyf. It was gr8 b8 m8. Should I r8 it an 8 ? Ok I feel I have satified my need to be cool. Now. This is a fantastic thread. I agree with everything on this . Some of the quotes from our fellow guardians are spot on. I too have found that I just don't care if I level up my guys. I have been stuck at lvl 32.5 since the dlc came out. The only reason I got that high is because I "ascended" my exotics with a shard. The drop rate for these etheric light pieces is frustrating at best. I found lvl 32 PoE do able; but tedious to the point I don't even care to do it again. PvP is a joke filled with cheaters and people that are either -that good or don't have lives. I started out on CoD and Battlefield so I know I am able to play at least at a acceptable level on pvp but this game just plain sucks. Try hards and "elitists". Any way Oh yeah ..... git rekt scub. :) stupid kids. Lrn 2 spl
-
I have 10 extras sitting in my vault, yeah i think maybe you should spend more time playing less complaining?
