This. ALL OF THIS. Bless this thread.
My two friends and I have been playing Destiny since the day it came out, and have been on board with house of wolves since the moment it launched on the server. We've spent hours trying to ready ourselves for PoE and all the new content with the raised level caps, but after this entire time we've hit such a huge impass. Last week we managed to earn maybe 1 EL per person from completing the level 34 PoE run. It was tough since we were all still 32-33, but we made it after a really long haul. This week however we can't help but feel the struggle is too dire for any EL rewards.
Bungie kind of screwed a lot of people out of getting EL this week with a dramatically increased difficulty on the 34 PoE run and boss, which I found to be a bloody mess after trying for over TWO HOURS on the boss fight alone in the final round and we still walked away with nothing to show for it. We could always try level 35 (and we did) which was seemingly easier (????) until we got to the fourth round. Again, a few hours later we walked away with nothing.
The fact that EL is a super-special drop in only super-difficult events is just maddening. We've played the nightfall on three characters both this week and last, with no EL anywhere to be seen. We've been spending at least 5-8 hours a day trying to get EL in PoE and in nightfalls, crucible daily and everything else we can think of.
The game has been set in a kind of way that's left a lot of people feeling helpless and overwhelmed. In order to get to level 34, you need EL. In order to get EL, you need to be level 33 or higher. It goes hand-in-hand with that trapped job mindset going around these days "In order to get a job you need experience, but the only way to get experience is to get a job." Essentially, you need experience to get experience. I figure that some of you understand what I mean and can back me up on how unfair and crippling that is. To feel that the odds are stacked against you even after you try your best is a new thing for HoW. In no time before this has the path to leveling up been this out of reach and contradictory. Even with all this going on, there's still that one person in our friendslist that has every character maxed, gets all the new guns/gear before anyone else and has EL falling out of their pockets at the seams. Especially when that person was a known cheeser before HoW, so it feels more than just a little unfair?
I don't think it's exactly the time you put into the game, it's some kind of RNG bias or something. (I'm not going to go off about unfair odds or what bungie needs to fix etc, etc) But I mean with my friends and I doing our best and being proven time after time that our best isn't worth squat, it is extremely frustrating to keep playing when all you have to look forward to is pushed out of your reach. Each week is basically the 34 PoE and the nightfall per character, then there's nothing to accomplish until next week. They should add EL into final drops for the raids on hard mode, and even stay true to their word and have a chance for EL to drop in the crucible daily package, not just passage coins and motes of light every single time.
At least then you have a better shot at getting rewarded for putting hours of time into the game. Sometimes, playing for hours just isn't enough, you have to be favored by the game's RNG to see any results. You either get all the rewards for average effort, or you try your hardest and get absolutely nothing for it.
This thread is brilliant, I really want to see bungie actually listen this time and make the game feel like it's worth continuing past level 32.

Bump.. well said
-
Yeah it's a catch 22.
-
A bump for your well articulated post.
-
With IB included you can get 15 from PvP this week and atleast 6 from PoE. How is etheric light rare exactly?
-
Including EL in IB this week is indeed a step in the right direction, but what I'm pointing out is what's going on before and after IB. Even before today there's so many Level 34's running around that you have to assume that most of them have been getting favored by the RNG or are extremely lucky in getting it. There's been posts all over that people have said it's "so easy" to obtain, but that doesn't increase the odds for the other people who aren't getting it. Saying it's easy for you doesn't mean it'll be the case for everyone else, it doesn't solve any problems. If anything, it just discourages the people who like myself are stuck with rotten luck or don't have enough time/effort to spare to get EL. Even with time though, like I said, it can't mean you're guaranteed to get what you're looking for. During or after IB I expect to see a lot more level 34's running around, but after IB is gone there's still less of a chance to get it. If there's players trying to get through IB who work all the time or don't have enough time to spare to reach rank 3 or 5, they're still going to have a hard time after the week ends unless Bungie does something to fine-tune the drop rates or offers more ways of obtaining it.

I love your post. In a very well articulated post, you've reinforced what many many gamers are currently going through on Destiny. This post soul easily be an addendum or testimonial added on to my OP, and I would be proud to put it up there if you would allow it. Again; great read, great post. The only way Bungie's Activision overlords will ever listen is f we keep letting them know that what we are experiencing is negative and letting them know that we want change.
-
I'm glad you liked it! You're more than welcome to add anything from my post to your original, I'm really delighted that you like it that much. (: I hope they listen to us and do something about it, I'm really glad that you made this thread and brought together so many individuals who can offer more than simple trolling or whining.

Thank you. I tried adding your post to my OP, but there's apparently a 10,000 character limit and I couldn't get it in. But I'm doing what I can to keep your post near the top as you've very well described the 'Catch 22' that many players are finding themselves caught in (myself included). I also think that by keeping the discussion going, Bungie may well institute some needed changes to the availability of Etheric Light. As it stands right now, EL is only really available to the "hardcore" player, and I don't think that's justifiable in any way.

Just do the level 32 PoE for the armor core. Also if your not good at PvP just but the mercy and get a first win boon and try to get to 6 wins. Then u will earn Etheric Light. Also with the boons you will only need 5 actual wins and thanks to the mercy you can get 3 losses before your kicked out. If you can't do PvP then just buckle down and get level 34 PoE done. It's over hyped for its difficulty. All u got to do is have everyone bring there best shot guns and when you spawn go to the far left if the map. The special guy you will need to kill will usually walk right up to that spot. After you kill the guy use any heavy you got and use your best primary on the boss to damage him. When the detainment shields come all of you huddle in a corner together and when they appear on you unload your shotgun ammo as a team. Unless your a sunsligner use your supers to take out the minions and generate orbs. Just keep doing this and you will kill the boss. Also Etheric Light is very easy to obtain if you can work as a team in both ToO and PoE. Good luck

You get bump of the century. Being a decent, but not top tier pvper, a person who doesn't have a solid group of people to do end game content like poe and raid with on a regular basis, and no ghorn to Make me stick out on lfg, helpless and overwhelmed is EXACTLY how i feel when it comes to this game. I get on and do something random until i get an invite from someone and hope it's the event I'm trying to do. Well written post

Agreed.

Wow, it's like a story! The story of the etheric light. Lost Without One Bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla. Bla bla bla bla bla blap bloo bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla, bla blo bla bla. The End

You are part of the reason why Bungie does nothing, and that this game shits on the people that play it. Your mother should have swallowed...
