I was thinking more about this argument in terms of total time to get Ghorn. Say for example you are guaranteed a Ghorn to drop from a raid or nightfall compared to playing the weekly and getting enough strange coins. In this example it would be someone who is starting a fresh account from scratch.
It would take more total time to make two characters to play through the weekly to get enough strange coins if Xur was selling it, then getting it to drop in a raid or nightfall with just one character. So yes, your argument is valid in the sense that people buying it from Xur would be earners and not just being lucky.
Plus by definition you have to be guaranteed a reward to consider it being earned. For example, if I work a job and get paid a certain amount for x amount of hours worked, then I earned that money. If I buy a lottery ticket with money I earned from a job, then win money through the lottery ticket, then I earned that money from the lottery ticket. If you obtain money as a gift and then go buy a lottery ticket and win, you did not earn that.
