I remember paying $50 when Castlevania 3 came out in 1989/90. Adjusted for inflation would be $89 today's money. That is about what I paid for my version of Destiny, which has been on sale at least twice since it released on X-box live btw. Add to the fact that it's running on a servers and probably took lots more people to develop and publish it's not a bad deal.
Game companies are having to find alternative ways to generate revenue streams and keep people interested in their products otherwise they will end up on this list:
