My own interpretation of the Traveler cards leads me to believe that it's a survivor. It may have built us up as a way of defending itself against the darkness. Though I feel the point is moot when one question comes to mind: why did the darkness leave? It is true that the Vex worship it and the Hive may channel it but why did the darkness itself leave? According to the second Darkness card it was a species ending event that entered our solar system. Our Golden Age ancestors didn't stand a chance, it's followers are here but where did the entity itself go? And why do the Nine (the closest things to the Darkness) stay at distance?

If you listen to xür at one point he says, "your traveller has a dark mirror" which could mean a number of things. Xür being an agent of the nine could have over heard some crazy stuff about I dark traveller called like I don't know the follower( I'm going to call it that) which is the creator of the darkness much like the traveller is the creator of the light the follower theory can be supported by the xür quote but he could be talking about the darkness itself. since there is so much speculation there is an infinite amount of possibilities.

The traveler being evil is so obvious its ridiculous. That's probably why they changed it. Didn't anyone see oblivion?

No city theory: It occurred to me that the city surrounding the Tower might be an illusion. After all, if we try to go there we die and conveniently respawn in the tower. The simulated city would give Guardians a reason to fight; to save what is left of humanity. Really though, we are just working for the Traveller

The Traveller and Speaker were originally evil, but Activision (the true Darkness ) refused to pay Joe Staten (the true light ), so Staten left, and Bungie tried fixing what was left but then Activision decided to send the product out there because they are greedy.

In an interview Luke Smith was asked if the Traveler was secretly evil and he took a minute to answer,"To early to answer"
-
What if the Traveler wasn't good or evil but merely was perpetuating an endless cycle of destruction and rebirth? However Rasputin cracked this and made her stay on Earth, pushing the cycle out the window.

The traveler could be a tool used by the darkness. To go forth and find species of a certain level of advancement they are considered "ripe for harvest" by the darkness. If they don't then the traveler uplifts the species to a level of advancement able to be harvested. That being the case, it is possible the enemies we face are pursuing the darkness to get at the traveler for being part of the plan. Kind of mass effect like in a sense. A different theory is its part of order vs chaos. Gives enough for a species to fight and if possible be formidable to stop the darkness or entropy (end of the universe). Another it's still a tool and part of some galactic game against two entities to see who will win the Galaxy.

Traveler only acts out of self preservation using alien life to distract the darkness

Luke smiths 104 questions with game informer he was asked if the traveller was evil, to which after a long hesitation and bumbled half answer pointed toward it being a giant ping pong ball of doom!!!
-
The last line is evidence against the theory. It implies that the traveler is being forced to do something unknowingly or is being controlled. The rest of the Grimoire regarding the Traveler implies it is well-intentioned.

Saw some concept art on the traveler, looks like the inside of the ship on that movie interstellar, full of green and buildings, maybe inside its humans from future or different dimension?

104 QandA from GI, the guy asks Luke if the Traveler is evil. Luke hesitates for a good amount of time, and finally says something like we'll see

Interesting. I wish to believe there is no explicitly things are totally good and evil. The Traveler, however, is what I believe to be the purist representation of the Light we know of. I think that the Darkness and the Light are both primeval forces that dictate how the Universe works. Like gravity, electromagnetism, and time. Yet the way Light and Dark work is what I believe to be pre- Big Bang. I.e. They are completely opposite yet exactly the same. Like matter and antimatter. How they managed to avoid destroying each other sooner I don't know. But here's what I do know. The Light is the antimatter in this situation. Meaning that it started as meant to be the loser. Alpha Lupi herself is what I believe to be the highest concentration of Light in the Universe we know of. But it is constructed of machinery. Which is limited sense. I choose to draw on another theory that states an all powerful race of beings dictates and controls the Universe. And I also believe they built the Traveler. There's something about that theory that has me worried. No matter how honorable a particular alien race may seem, I would think that self preservation is the top priority. What if the Traveler was meant to be their guard? An all powerful, intelligent sphere that can resurrect the dead as an immortal army and can also release a shockwave powerful enough to tear a hole in space time? There's much we don't know. But if my theory is correct that means we have no idea what this other races motivations are. Perhaps they are still alive and controlling the Traveler meaning they control us. The only game changer we know of is Rasputin. The last Warmind. I think this race may also be Rasputin controlling the Traveler. We have already seen that Rasputin has amazing abilities. What if Rasputin developed conscious and decided to control the Traveler. I think Rasputin is evolving to the point of self awareness. And self preservation. He already is uneasy around us. What if he decides we're no longer needed and strikes? What could we do? There's so much left to answer but do I think the Traveler herself is evil? No. Do I think she can be controlled by something less than good? Yes. We don't know anything about what she does. That's the meaning of a miracle. But the Traveler is already silent. Who knows what could happen when she awakens? Was she being reprogrammed? Will she remember who she is? Or will she die? If we lose the Traveler who knows what else we will lose. The Light, our Ghosts, our abilities, or even our knowledge?

There is evidence in one or two of the cards that the Fallen were once like the Guardians, touched and raised up by the Traveler. The Fallen lost their homeworld to the Darkness and it makes me wonder if we are merely another in a long line. Perhaps the reason the Darkness came to their world was because of the Traveler, like it did to ours, and when it did it nearly destroyed them completely. As their world burned, it fled to find another host species to use as a proxy army to defend itself. As it ran, it made victims of all it passed, perhaps not intentionally, but certainly without any visible remorse. The Cabal flee the Darkness as well, so one may infer that the Traveler at least passed near their system and brought a storm in its wake. I'm not sure what this means in the long run, but the pieces fit. There's also a good possibility that the Hive were once a human-like species (note the similarities in their soldiers' garb to flight suits, optic helmets and reinforced armor; perhaps this calls back to what they once were) and that the Vex and the Traveler may be related somehow, though whether they share a creator or one made the other is uncertain.
