After discussing the Traveler and its intentions last night, I decided to post something in response. I stole most of the information below from a forum post because it includes some of the same information that I referred to last night.
There has been a massive flood of people who claim that the Traveler is actually evil. However, what many of you probably don't know is that this is wrong. Shocking, I know, but this is a seriously outdated theory originating from Vanilla. Several things have since proved it wrong, including the Books of Sorrow.
But JonSn017, the original plot of the game included an evil Traveler!
Yes, the original plot did. It was seriously reworked since then, and is not a source of reliable and concrete evidence.
But we're just as bad as the Hive! We're exterminating everything else in our system! Ahamkaras?!?!?!
No, we're not. We kill the Fallen over a misunderstanding over the Traveler and each other's true purpose. We kill the Hive because they are servants of the Darkness, which is hunting the Traveler. We kill the Vex because to complete their purpose of securing an end state for all possible outcomes, they must destroy the Light. We kill the Cabal because they are trying to turn our system into part of their empire and probably enslave us like the Psions.
The only things claiming the Traveler are good are the direct servants of it! War propaganda!
Both the Light's side (Ghosts, Speaker, etc.) and the Dark's side (the Hive, the Worms) tell the true purpose of the Traveler: to turn the universe into a utopia by giving Golden Ages to every race it finds.
The Traveler brought the Darkness here on purpose!
Yes, I guess it did. The Traveler had been chased around the universe for millions (if not billions) of years. That probably gets tiring. We got such a bright Golden Age because it wanted to make a final stand against the Darkness here (Ghost Fragment: The Traveler 2).
I'm going to end this with a brief discussion about "good" and "evil". They are not concrete standpoints: they depend on who's talking. The Traveler is good because it brought us a Golden Age, nurture our growth, and helped us fight the Darkness. The Darkness is evil because it brought the Hive and tried to exterminate us. To the Hive, the Traveler is the evil one, and the Darkness is the good one.
Additionally, let's talk about their purposes. The Traveler wants a utopia universe with no wars or dictators; a universe built on peace and prosperity. The Darkness wants a universe built on ruthlessness. In the Darkness's universe, something is only worthy of existence if it cannot be defeated. If you can be defeated, you should not exist.
I hope this enlightened you a bit
