I am not a Bungie employee. What I am saying in this thread is just a theory.
Not your typical thread on Thorn in here, but stick with me. Now, some of you may be thinking, "Yeah, that's obvious, Charlemagne." Well, not really. It's been quite the debate between lore-mongers, like myself, whether he was a Warlock or a Hunter.
People said Warlock since his Grimoire card is that of a Warlock with Thorn, because the other two Guardians who studied the Darkness were Warlocks, and because the cloak in the game doesn't actually say it was his. It could just be based off his gear or cut from a Warlock's robes. However, I am convinced he was a Hunter.
The reasons being are:
1. The cloak despite what I said before;
2. His whole persona reading that of a Hunter who roams the Frontier. His Grimoire passages and the ones he's included in talk of his hand cannon, a common weapon of a Hunter, and of other Hunters he was always around;
3. Unlike the Warlocks who mostly studied the Darkness, Yor actually took a more active approach to it and let it consume him. He wasn't studying it to understand it, but rather letting it fill him so he could have its power. Perhaps that's how he thought he could understand it. Maybe he hoped to control it and hold it at bay, like a martyr finding a way to defeat the enemy and using their own being as a catalyst for that test. What he was before though he was not after;
4. The biggest point, and, honestly, the one I literally just realised, is Thorn. Sure, it's a hand cannon which are most typically alined with Hunters, but that doesn't mean other classes can't use them. No, it was something on Thorn that I stupidly missed for too long. The sights. Well, just below them. The above image is not me showing the thorns the gun fires, but the triangle. Some of you may recognise it, but it's an older symbol from before Destiny release. It's the original symbol of the Hunters, as still seen here.

Thoughts? Hunter or Warlock?
Edit: I am aware of the symbol being on Bad Juju, but I think that could just be because it shares a similar curse. It's possible that that symbol became symbol for a curse of Darkness after Yor succumbed. It's still a Hunter symbol though.
Edit 2: Just to add fuel to the fire, I also don't think he was Jaren Ward.
Edit 3: I'm starting to believe the Ward-Yor theory...but at the same time, I can't yet. There still missing facts that we need.

Dregden Yor- Hunter possibly a hybrid of a Warlock and Hunter. Ward- Was a hunter who held TLW and protected a small town. Shin- Adopted Son of Ward. Possibly. Seeked revenge on Yor with TLW. Yor let him live to see if his rage would push him to darkness but it didn't.

my opionion. yor is warlock. card says he died more than once-hence fireborn come back to life. also voidfang vestments is hand cannon. VOG chest piece 3 triangles on back. i think jaren WARD is titan hence WARD of dawn, and described as strong and defender. also WEI NEING says we will be the last light/last word. shin malphur was hunter which makes fireteam
-
Thorn 4 and and Last Word 4 proved that Dredgen Yor wasn't Jaren Ward, neither was he Shin Malphur. This makes us believe that Dredgen was Pujari, a theory made up a while ago, and Pujari was once a Warlock.

Edited by Sancho: 9/22/2015 4:43:27 AMThorn 4 proves he was not Ward.

That triangle is the weapon of sorrow. I believe the Pujari-yor theory. Necrochasm has that triangle, too. Bad juju has the symbol because Toland tried to make a weapon if sorrow.

Warlocks-pulse rifles Titans-auto rifles Hunters-Hand cannons/scout rifles
-
I kept the cloak just because it had his name on it. Actually, come to think of it, my entire vault is full of cloaks...
-
The two people that studied the darkness was Osiris and Toland.

Edited by Legend of Jordy: 7/14/2015 12:17:47 AMWarlocks didn't exist back then as far as I know. If they talk like a cowboy or detective, I'm assuming they are a Hunter. If he was a Warlock he would talk more like Shakespeare or Aristotle.
-
Saying that "hunters use hand cannons the most" isn't always true and I don't think that does anything for your argument
-
In the original story was gonna use him as the Hunter vanguard.
-
After going back and reading the cards, i noticed Shin Malphur says in the card The Last Word 1 that 2 men stepped into his life, one of light, and the other of darkness. I'm taking that as seperate people and not the same guy with two personas
-
I think Yor is from the same place as both Shin Malphur and Jaren Ward (it's thought that the guy in charge of palamon was a relation to Ward, hence palamon may have been his birthplace) and therefore Yor has known Ward a long time. I do not think they are the same person, as the cards very much seem to imply they are stalking Yor to kill him in revenge for burning Palamon to the ground, and Ward goes out to confront him alone to prevent any of the 'kids' being injured and in the process is outgunned by Thorn Jarens ghost and Last Word are found/ inherited by Shin, who then goes on to continue the hunt, finally killing Yor in Dwindlers(name ?) ridge.

Edited by StormiDutch: 6/12/2015 9:51:58 AM1. Eris wore a cloack but is also a warlock 2. Hunters are long distance precision characters so a scout rifle is more of a hunter weapon (they also hold a scout rifle at the character creation hunter option) 3. Toland this the same if I'm not mistaking. 4. That it's a hand cannon doesn't prove anything.
-
Maybe that symbol (of the hunters and curse) is meant to suggest that the Hunters have Darkness stored in them. And by extension of that, based on their studies of the Darkness, the Warlocks realize this and thus have disdain for the Hunters.
-
Cloak of Dredgen Yor. Need I say more?
-
Or option C. Dredgen Yor is part of the illuminati
-
No! really? old news is old.
-
Shows why Ward and Yor are the same person, Ward was a hunter that besides wielding The Last Word also made a gun called Rose that would later become Thorn after his corruption

Leave it to the Hunters to try and do what Warlocks do and fail miserably at it. That is also how we know Yor was a Hunter :P
-
Warlocks don't make hand cannons. They don't fall to the darkness. Like yor, they over come it and become even stronger.
-
Well duh
-
Anyone know What Dredgen Yor's name originally was? When he was still a hero?
-
What if dredgen yor was the hero and when he became corrupted, he turned into xyor, the unwed. In order to obtain thorn, you have to separate it from it's creator. Also, xYor
