Damage types.

Some weapons have different types of damage types, here's the list: Arc,Void,and solar (solar is my personal favorite). Sometimes enemies with shields glow orange,blue, or purple indicating the type of damage they are most vulnerable to. Let's review the damage type colors: void(purple) arc(blue) and solar(Orange). Enemies that are most vulnerable to these types: Fallen(Solar/arc) vex(void) hive(solar\void) cabal(any type but mainly arc) PVP damage Type recommended is solar.
