Welcome to Mr. Smiley's Xbox Lounge. Here we reminisce about the days of honey mustard glory and Bungie chapters. We're a bunch of "old" Bungie fans, most of whom have been around since the early Halo days.

The new Xbox has been announced: the Xbox One. So what do you guys think? It's times like these that I find MSXL to be the best place for some good discussion on current events in the gaming industry. Let's do what we do best? update: holy cow, the new "Smart Match" system sounds great! seems like there are still some surprises that weren't mentioned in the main keynote. update 2 HOLY BALLS! Check out this demo of the Kinect 2! My thoughts on the hardware: + Great design. The people that are complaining that it looks too "boxy" or too much like a VCR/DVR don't understand the entire purpose of set-top entertainment boxes: to blend in. The original white Xbox was a giant, curvy white and glowing green eyesore in the middle of my entertainment center. This new Xbox won't have that problem. + The controller looks great. They didn't change too much, but thank god the D-pad looks like a real D-pad finally. The idea of force feedback on the triggers also sounds like a cool idea. No stupid screens or any other frills, just what looks like a damn solid controller. Awesome. + New Kinect looks beefier and seems more accurate. More voice commands is a good thing, as is more intuitive speech pattern recognition (not having to always say "Xbox" before saying everything). Also, being to finally turn on the Xbox with my voice sounds great! + Blu-ray! Finally! My thoughts on OS: - Cable-based entertainment is slowly dying as people turn to online content/streaming. I can't help but feel that basing your new features on the idea that everyone has Cable kind of alienates a growing base of users that don't have cable. I've never had cable, and I have a growing number of friends that are dropping their pricey subscription fees for more convenient means of entertainment. + Multitasking and "snapping" content looks cool. - The dashboard still looks overly busy and confusing. ? Really hoping the in-game dashboard doesn't suck terribly anymore. It's currently laggy as hell and overly complicated. I hope the new overlay is fast and intuitive. + More than 99 friends (10x more)? FINALLY. My thoughts on the games: - What games? - Great. Call of Duty. Whoop-dee-fukin-doo. - Great, a nice looking car game that looks like all the other nice looking car games for the last two generations. + You can play games while they're installing? Nice. + Updates install automatically in the background? Nice. ? Games are linked to your account and don't require a disc? Running a game without needing the disc is great. I don't mind them being linked to the account I guess? ? You have to pay a fee if you share the game with a friend and they want to play it on their account. I understand why this is being done, but the question is: how much is this fee? + DOGS!!! Other thoughts: ? Yay for a Halo show that's probably executively produced by Spielberg which means he actually has almost nothing to do with it! All around it was a boring event, but mainly because MS seems to be saving the "good stuff" (aka, GAMES) for their big E3 event coming up in 19 days. So I will probably end up being more excited after that event... as long as there's not a ton of Kinect garbage.

  • Not that it's really a reason to not get the PS4, but the controller is still shit.

    • Good post. To address your poll question, I am buying it on day one, period. However, that has more to do with all of the people I know both on and off line owning xboxes than it has to do with anything I've seen since the release. XBL has been superior to the PSN since launch, and that's always been the biggest selling point for the xbox for me. However, I also used to love the exclusives from back in the day. That's not really the case anymore, especially since Halo 4 took Halo out of the must buy category for me. I'm sure I'm missing one, but off the top of my head I can't really remember the last game that came out that was Xbox only that I really enjoyed. Reach, maybe? Either way, I look at the playstation and see Metal Gear, Uncharted, The Last of Us etc... and I get really jealous. I haven't owned a PS3. I always said I'd eventually get one, but at this point I might just wait and get a PS4 as well. Gaming and I have had a very interesting relationship these last few years. I could not have cared any less about the launch of the Wii U (although this seems to be a mutual feeling across most of the gaming world) and as of right now, the Xbox presentation didn't really do anything for me. I know we still don't know all the details and things will come in to focus a bit more during E3, but they really need a good presentation to hype me. Between this online once a day rumor (my internet connection in my apartment has been known to go down for a week or so at random. You'd think this would drive me crazy, but between my smartphone and my xbox 360, it really had no effect on my daily lifestyle) the fee for letting friends borrow a game, kinect now being a requirement (I've still yet to ever buy or even try out the original kinect. I don't know a single person that owns one) and the games that have so far been announced (If I get tricked into buying another call of duty, I'm going to hate myself) I really don't care about the Xbox One right now. This is all very weird. I said I'm buying it at launch. I look at the next few months of gaming and there are no xbox games that really excite me until GTA comes out. I'm probably going to buy splinter cell not because I want to buy splinter cell, but because I'm going to be super bored with gaming. Really the only new series I'm looking forward to is Destiny, and we know so little about it that I can't even get myself excited for that yet. I think at the end of the day, I'm just tired of the same BS. A rehashed call of duty, a rehashed madden, and a rehashed assassins creed every year. I'm currently enjoying Bioshock infinite not really because I think the game is all that good, but because I've only played one other bioshock before. I want another rainbow six game so I can play a shooter that isn't call of duty. I don't know where this train of thought is headed, I'm getting a little off topic now. The point is, I'm going to buy an Xbox One more out of habit than anything else. However, even though I didn't buy a PS3, the PS4 launch event peaked my interest just a tad. And since very little peaks my interest these days gaming-wise, it's going to be enough to make me get a PS4 and an Xbox One. Whether or not I make the decision in 2020 to buy the PS5 instead of the Xbox Two (lol) will be entirely decided by the games that come out during this next generation. The fact that it's even a possibility that I would ditch my 10 year old XBL account seemed insane even as recently as a year ago. And it's not that I necessarily dislike what I've seen so far with The One, I'm just tired of the same stuff every year in the gaming industry. So maybe it's not so much that I like what I've seen with the PS4 yet, it's just different than what I'm used to. tl;dr I'm buying both systems, I'm not really as super excited as I thought I would be, and I hate playing so many damn sequels every year.

        • Who the hell is voting to buy it day one?! Guys, I'm a huge Xbox fan, but have you seen the news today? They've had to lower the clock speed because of 'heating issues'. Overall system performance is now rumoured to be 900 gigaflops, vs the PS4's 1840. And the system is going to be $50 more on launch, AND the Kinect can't be unplugged otherwise it won't work - come on guys!

          • I'm glad they cleared up the whole "always online" issue. I just want something that feels sensible, something intuitive and easy-to-use with a reasonable price tag. I'm not sure yet if the Xbox One will fit into this, or if the PS4 will... I'm not too concerned with hardware specs, so I won't bother comparing. Ultimately, both consoles are going to be reasonably impressive at-launch and then be "outdated" within a year (but hey, it's a console, so whatever). I guess I can't really formulate a solid opinion until more information is released. If I end up really liking what's coming with the Xbox One, I probably won't have the time to play it anyway...

            • I keep going back and forth, But i know in my heart I'll be going with the X1. Either I play with a few friends that i know locally, or i play with hundreds that i've known in the Xbox community for years. I don't mind the always online stuff. Kind of excited about walking into my home and saying 'xbox on', even if it's gimmicky. I can be in the middle of cooking my dinner and just yell towards my tv, bringing the last movie i was watching up, ready to play at the moment i sit at the couch? Sweet :P Hope to see you guys on Xbox live.
