Dear Guardian,
As much as I like to help and encourage people I must stress a few reasons why you SHOULD NOT be taking part in a Raid on The Vault Of Glass.
1. You are below Rank 27.
The lower your Rank, the less damage you can do. And I mean waayyyy less! At Rank 25 you are looking at a 43% reduction in damage output!
2. No Mic.
You refuse to use your mic or you don't have one or people in your house are sleeping. For whatever reason, you are not on your mic. Communication is absolutely 100% critical in the VoG. Sometimes you even need to back out into Orbit to fully discuss and strategize. Impossible if you are not using your mic.
3. Party Chat.
Even worse than not having a mic is not joining (or leaving) a Party Chat. The game volume is less loud when you are in a Party Chat , as opposed to in game chat, so its easier to communicate without everyone raising their voices over gun fights (i.e. the Destiny chat).
If you are in the in game chat and we are in Party Chat then we can't hear you and you can't hear us!
4. Leadership
Only one or two people should be giving out orders and instructions during critical moments and battles. Nobody else should speak over them except to call out things that change the game i.e. Relic, teleports, oracles, strong enemies, health, hazards, situation report, countdown (time's vengeance) etc.
5. Its not a Strike.
People often start playing the VoG and within an hour they are saying that they have to leave for work or to sleep or eat or whatever else.
Please don't start playing if you haven't got the time to spare. This isn't going to be done quickly unless YOU and YOUR WHOLE TEAM absolutely know what they are doing in the VoG.
Every time someone leaves, that person has to be replaced. The new person has to be 'worked in' and that can take a while. If someone else leaves 30mins later and the pattern continues then you can see how things can drag out. Yes, we have a week to complete the VoG and there are checkpoints but that is besides the point. Think about how you are affecting the team. Don't just join to get that one chest and then leave.
6. Weapons, Supers, Builds & Perks
Use what will benefit you and your team. This isn't the time to be using a weapon just because you like the look or sound of it. This isn't the time to be doing your bounties. This isn't where you level up your character. You are facing the Vex. They use purple shields. You need weapons and builds that maximise Void damage to break these shields. You need Titans who are using Defender. Hunters should be using Invisibility in the Gorgon's Labyrinth and Golden Gun during Boss fights and for Oracles.
Warlocks can go either way. Customise your perks so that they help you and your team to get through. Don't be lazy. Don't be selfish.
7. Be patient with people.
Not everyone knows the ins and outs of the VoG. Everyone on the team should be welcoming to someone who is new to it and take the time to explain things before and as they happen. Don't just kick someone because they got it wrong 5 times in a row. People won't begin to get better until they fully understand what is happening. There are different reasons why the whole team gets wiped. Explain them fully. If things are not going well its a good idea for everyone to regroup in Orbit, ask how everyone is feeling, try to give encouragement and keep morale up. Talk about where things are going well and where things need work. Restock on ammo at the Tower and maybe take a real life break for 5 mins before getting back into it.
8. But I was invited...
Thats fine. If you find yourself in a fireteam of 6 and on route to Venus and you know that you haven't got time or that you are not ready, then please politely let the others know ASAP. That way you can get going to what you really want to do and the rest of the team can start looking for a replacement without anybody having their time wasted. You are helping the team out more by giving notice to leave right at the start. We've all been there. One minute you are doing your own thing then you get an invite to do something that you would rather not do at that time.
Summary
If you are unwilling to follow this advice then you are severely hindering your team's progression within the VoG. Please do the right thing and don't play unless you are willing to do your best to help everyone to get through it.
I am writing this out of love. So that we can all benefit.
Regards,

P.S. If you can think of more reasons why people shouldn't raid just yet, please say below but be constructive.
Thanks in advance!

I agree with all these points. I know it can be difficult to find time in a day but it's no use playing it if you don't have it. I personally use my hunters invisibility to run out on the battlefield and revive teammates. The gorgon thing is just a bonus lol. As for warlocks I would say go with nova bomb subclass as it is chock full of little void goodies for your vex friends
-
I agree on most of this but #2 is stupid. You dont "need" a mic. I watched my friend on playstation beat it with randoms where only 2 kids had mics and they were just shelling out directions. It looked simple enough.
-
Thanks for the tips. Now I just need to find holes in my limited schedule to play.

Edited by Wrath: 10/24/2014 11:44:17 PMAll these rules apply to hard mode. Normal mode? I could probably get a group of 4 to do it flawlessly, it's a joke, so every one replying saying "OMG u don't need communication the raid is ez mode", you are right. But also, you're doing the normal raid, so nobody gives a flying -blam!-.
-
I have yet to attempt the raid for a few reasons. A: i'm a hunter and that seems undesirable.B: i'm trying to push into level 27 to improve my chances and C: I know there are certain factors like the ones you have mentioned and am reluctant to spoil others raid experience by not knowing them so thank you for the tips, they are greatly appreciated.

Edited by Yuyu: 10/24/2014 10:27:15 PMDon't forget about the language as well. I was playing a raid with Dutch or French people, abd I had absolutely no clue what they were saying.
Communication is 100% critical in VoG.
I've never laughed so hard at anything on these forums. I'm deaf, so, as you can imagine, I never use a mic. And it's very easy to see that the objectives of the raid are easy. Opening the vault is straightforward, beating the Templar is straightforward, Gorgon maze is nothing but over-glorified hide-and-seek and follow the leader, and you can get past the platforms without ever setting foot on one. The only part that is hard is setting up the Atheon battle, but once that's done, it's easy again. The mini-map tells you what portal people were transported to, and the oracles and enemies spawn in the same spots every time in the portals. Playing through the Vault of Glass on normal is not hard at all, once you beat it once, you know everything that needs to be done. Absolutely no mics are required. Playing it on Hard mode is a bit different because it requires team cohesion, but if you are really doing PuG games for Hard mode, you deserve every ounce of frustration you get.
-
What's the point in doing the raid more than once? Are you really that addicted to the loot drops? You realize it's no different than a slot machine addiction right?
-
If you can listen you don't need a mic. Period
-
Hunters should be using Invisibility in the Gorgon's Labyrinth
It's better an easier to not have the Hunters go invisible because the Gorgons still get alerted and will easily spot non-hunters because if it, so therefor I make hunters take in is off before we set out
-
Oh man, im soo glad u told me the rules about VOG. Im gonna abide by everything u just said...

Just to comment about your It's not a strike rule. The Raid is set up so you DON"T have to do it one sitting as it saves your progression in the raid.
-
Was doing a raid last night on normal, ended up having to boot a clanmate Bc he wasn't using a mic and ran around doing his own thing.
-
Mic does not matter as long as they know what to do
like me :)
-
I don't have a mic and have completed several raids with people dying only at the hardest parts (against Atheon for example) and most of those were just unexpected deaths (like not knowing they were targeted by supplicants or Atheon himself. Some did just back off the edge accidentally though). Most of those times things went swimming though. Made it through the labyrinth in less than 5 minutes in some of these and destroyed the Templar without ease. I would like to add in most of these cases there were maybe 2-4 people with mics.
-
Edited by Shadow wolf: 10/24/2014 10:22:21 PMAnother thing is when people use rude language. I know it is annoying when you die but please don't swear like there's no tomorrow because of it. At first on Wednesday no one said anything rude but the moment we got to templer the language went down hill from there. I couldn't believe how many just swore because we all died. I think that should be added to not do list. All I'm asking is to lower or control the way people swear and use rude language.

Good post. I have been fortunate to play with my personal friends and some good add ons from Reddit. We made sure to post for adults and social players.
-
Everything up to the gatekeeper can be done with minimal to no mic communication whatsoever. As long as everyone knows there role (and is good at it), I've actually found that at least everything up to the Gorgons is easier with no mic communication.
-
we did a run with a level 23 go figure ha. it is his second character though and hes done the raid like a million times but still.
-
One last thing to note: please, at the very least, read up on the VoG strategies to be familiar with the encounters. This will be especially true for the next patch when Atheon will begin randomizing the players.
-
I think my first raid was about 50% level 26's (including me) and it went just fine. Mics aren't completely necessary in the raid- hell I've seen people do fine in World of Warcraft raids which often require more Communication again without mics.
-
Edited by Soul57912: 10/24/2014 8:06:01 PMIf you are a hard core raider like my clan is(including me), if some fu-cks up 5 times in a row. They are out, we don't need them wasting anyones time. I don't do the raid for people out of sympathy( unless they are a very close friend and skilled). I do it to level up and get gear. That way if i do get my gear i can be more beneficial to the team instead of holding them back. Last, when i get invited to do the raid with a random group who are tower surfing. If they only have like 1 other guy, i will not help because they always ask for me to invite my friends, keep in mind my friends have there own agendas so im not about to disturb them if they have already done the raid and there is nothing in it for them to get.
-
Good stuff
-
This is why I havent done the raid at all yet. I dont want to come in underr geared. Im a 27 almost 28 lock and I get my last leg wep tomorrow...so inexperienced woth raids I dont wanna hold anyone back.
-
Well in all fairness to bungie they have catered to the working class with the raid so you can pick up where your team left off cause 70% of people actually have a life lol
