Story vs Persistent Game

So we have this concept: Less focus on linear story and more focus on stories accumulated with your friends. I wasn't sure what to think about this at first (and I'm still not entirely sure) but maybe they are onto something that we just don't realize yet. So what do you think? Are you excited for this new concept of story? Do you prefer linear story? Do you think there will even be a major linear story in light of this? Or do you think Bungie could really be onto something here?

    Tbh, it's the reason I always avoided MMOs, or open world games like Skyrim. I never liked the fact that the main story gets lost among all the other activities the game floods you with. I love to be immersed in a beautiful story, and felt that all these other activities would take away the urgency from your primary objective. I have yet to properly play through an open world game - they probably handle the balance of freedom and linear story a lot better - but I'll probs never truly invest in an MMO. Thankfully, there's no subscription fee for Destiny, so I can at least try and see if I like what they do. EDIT: The Division looks very promising. It's open, and persistent, but it all ties into the main story very well.

    • Frankly, I think it's a brilliant move. It's obviously the next logical step for gaming this new gen. In order to insure that gamers continued to come back to a certain game, developers would release DLC add-ons. But, they were too few and too far in between. What if (knowing your players are always connected), you could simply update a game with new scenarios weekly? It wouldn't even need to be a major instance. Just something to show the player that the world is constantly evolving, and offering something new for the player to encounter. There will always need to be a linear story as far as progress and end game are concerned. The best you can do is to figure in several different contingencies to get the player to arrive there. But, what of there was no end game? This would leave your scripting completely open, and would allow you to just keep building the world until it almost takes a life of its own. Question is, are we there yet? Is this something we're going to see this gen? Instead of making sequels, keep adding to the game you already have.

    • My biggest problem with storytelling in MMOs has always been that you can't affect the world. You're going along, saving the world or whatever, and you finish a mission. Then when you're done, you look back and see another group of people doing [i]exactly the same mission.[/i] It kills the suspension of disbelief. Your story advances, but the world stays the same. I feel like the point of "massively multiplayer" is kind of lost if you're just doing the exact same thing you would do in any other game, only with a large group. Obviously, it poses a massive technical challenge to have any player affect the world in a meaningful way. In fact, it seems borderline impossible. But with Bungie talking all about "Becoming legend" and Destiny being a "living world" it really has me excited, that they might actually try what no one has been able to pull off. And if anyone is going to try the impossible it's Bungie.

      • I definitely think Bungie is the current front runner when it comes to next-gen dynamic storytelling. I also have a feeling other developers are salivating at the mouth, waiting to get their hands on Destiny. So they can glean some inspiration for their own projects. Sink or swim, everyone's eyes are on Bungie. Looking for clues as to what's next.

              I prefer a linear story with lots of lore. Think The Elder Scrolls. I want this to be like futuristic Skyrim.

            • I think it was mentioned in one of the comments, but I feel like it will be a kind of hybrid of linear and open-world-with-friends story telling. The way the game is described, there are major plot points, and perhaps even major linear story elements, which are meant to be more deeply engrossing and story driven. That will then be contrasted with open-world exploration story telling. It almost seems like Destiny will be a good blend of both, allowing us to never get too bogged down or bored with just one element or type of game play.

            • i would like to see a mix where we have a linear storyline that takes places over the 10 years / 4 discs, but the game itself should also depend on how we interact with the world. If we throw 100 guardians at an event because we just are always online bungie better be sending us waves we really have to try to work together to defeat sometimes. Assuming you get 100 levels different levels of enemies should attack in multiple areas. In the most hardcore areas you might not typically see a level 15 w/e but in a level 15 area you should sometimes encounter a level 50 something that you simply need to run away from, get more help, or hope someone passing by can save you. The threat of being out in the universe with just a few people should be very real. Also, as en enemy whos taken over the planets intelligence is clearly there since the enemies have their own ranks why not receive updates on the enemies ranks and things going on in their worlds as side stories. Not just events that are fighting. What about an event where we show up to an NPC titan whos gotten word that such and such is forming a new weapon using w/e from inside planet w/e and a team of xy and z need to go take care of it.

            • I like this idea of forming your own story in the world. You are destined to take back the solar system for Humans and the other races, you just don't know how your Destiny will unfold. So when the game comes out you won't be saying the same thing happened to you like a thousand other people, you will be able to make yourself a legend.

                It will be an integration of both styles of campaign. For those who play alone and wish to keep play a traditional campaign, you have the ability to do so without any other player interaction. However, if you would like to play with friends and meet new players, you can do that as well. As your character progress into new and untamed territories, the combat and loot will increase in difficulty and value.

              • Well, I'm find with it as long as the major plot points are explored. A linear story only works if it is engrossing and the gameplay can keep from hindering the telling of the story. I don't foresee any issues coming from Bungie so I'm not the least bit concerned.
