Well...most of this isn't necessarily news as much as it is variations of old news and different perspectives.
But are MMO's (or something similar) the future of console gaming? What are your thoughts?

Destiny is not an MMO! it just has MMO mechanics but thayt doesnt mean its an MMO
-
I really wouldn't say that Destiny is an MMO, and yes it is more like a "Shared World Shooter" or SWS for short. And if Bungie doesn't want to categorize it as an MMO then I think we should be okay with that.

It's an MMO. What it is NOT, is an MMORPG =P

if u played boarder lands 2 same thing not an MMO

This is news?

More on topic, I hope so! I love open, shared environments with other real ppl running about.

Destiny, and GTA V in its own ways, are scaled down MMO's. Bungie prefers the term, "Shared World Shooter," but really it's a refined version of the MMO style of gameplay. There's just as many, if not more players, but the way how they're handled is different. We're all put into separate lobbies that we can leave and join as we please. Essentially, all the good parts of an MMO, but the chaos is under control.

The best way to answer this question is to ask BUNGiE is this game a persistent world or sandbox game? If "Yes" is the answer than more than likely you will be playing a MMO of sorts. Not that this is a bad thing or good it simply would be defined by implantation.

I think it'll be a console fad
-
I think so. There's no reason to think otherwise. Why have a game of just 5 on 5 when you can have 50 on 50 or 100 on 100 in a hugely open world? We've been slowly approaching PC-level graphics, now it's time to get up to PC-level performance and interactions.

No, I think open world games are.

Edited by Voll: 7/22/2013 3:04:11 PMNot sure about "MMO", if that term is accompained by all of its nuisances. BUNGiE said they wanted avoiding such assumptions, that's why they don't use "MMO". Let's hope they stay true to their word. Nonetheless, in the not-so-distant future we'll be seeing more "social" games, or more "shared-world" features being implement. I just hope they don't forget the couch-experiences, I want to be able to play Destiny with my family!

I think MMOs on console is a great idea and I would love to play them. I think the only reason destiny was afraid to put that label on was because when people here MMO they hear WoW and destiny didn't want to be compared to any game and have people think it comes with the luggage of WoW like fees and annual payments. But Besides the MMO there will always be the current gaming witch is good.

I'm hoping Bungie is not turning destiny into an MMO after they already said they weren't. Come on guys don't start backstabbing.

This game is not an MMO!
