I haven't done a Destiny-themed art piece yet as I'm still working on human faces, portraits and my other weak points in art so I can do a good one.
This is my first portrait that I've done and I'd like any feedback whatever it is. I drew this using pencils of varying shades and it took about 8 hours to finish. Other info about it can be found here: http://themisthunter.deviantart.com/art/Lightning-Final-Fantasy-XIII-443262027?q=gallery%3ATheMistHunter&qo=1

Like Plain Ben said earlier, I found that since the scanner requires an extremely bright light to run over the image to scan it, it was bleaching the art a bit and making it all look light. Now I'm doing what many others on DA do with pencil art; digitally darkening them so they look like the original. This is how it should look like and I've posted a link in this comment to the new version so you all can see it. Since I am entering this in a physically located art contest, I am still re-working the original so it'll look good for the people there and using all the great comments and advice everybody's given me.

Very nice, and some great advice already given to make this even better. Keep it up.

Really great start. I say start because I think you can do some more work on this to make it even better. You mentioned that you used a variety of shades, that's very good that you're aware of that concept, however you need to push it more. If you look at the scale I've included your drawing only has values within the first two or three columns. Ideally it would have values that span the entire scale. You have a solid base to work with and one of the hardest parts of portrait drawing is being aware of value and how light plays off of a face. Take a look at this image here and blur your eyes. Use that as a start for where your general values should go on the face. I really like it so far! Keep it up and if you do put more work into this one I'd love to see it. Here are some more resources if you want to learn more about portrait drawing. It's one of my favorite areas of art so forgive me if I rambled. Edited by Plain Ben: 4/18/2014 11:08:39 PMEverything seems way too light, that's either my monitor or the scanner, I quickly darkened it on PS anyways. But basically to reiterate on Cal's point you need to use a wider range of values, which I know is a real pain with just pencils shading large spaces. You could try a few quick value studies with other mediums (charcoal, markers, digital were my go-to) to get a good range, and just do quick test sketches. But still, that's definitely a great first portrait, better than my first for sure, and it's always good to push the parts you're weaker in.

*Gasp* Do you have any of her in her Valkyrie armor?!

The nose is pristine; however, the shading on her right cheek is tad-bit messily done. Overall an excellent work.

Nice! I'd suggest using some darker graphite or ink to boost the shadows, you need a bit more definition, and then it will be amazing :)
