Hey I can definitely answer your question...one is to start the Daily strike mission which is on you main orbit map to the far left middle icon. Yes, it is hard to do on your own but you learn a lot about hiding spots and how the mechanics of the different areas work, trust me you learn a lot. Also you should look for the crossed swords to the right of the Earth on the map, these are the Strike missions. There are four shields the first is Level 18 and these are random groupings with two other guardians and they are the standard strike missions just beefed up alittle. They are a bit difficult and yes you may die ALOT, you just get in there and do it. ONce you complete that mission don't leave, you will either continue on with the same guys or if they leave you get reset to a new strike with new people and it just goes on and on. The most I did was four cause that took almost 3 hours, last night actually and after the fourth time of running this I went up two levels and I got a legendary (my first). I am a grinder player, love Final Fantasy, so I don't have issues with just running things over and over. I downloaded the event app to my phone and this gives you a rough estimate of what is happening and where in regards to Public Events,. So I will go to the Earth or Moon o patrol and then just do patrolling in what ever area the next upcoming event is and then if it comes and goes and nothing happens I look for the next one on the app and rush there and patrol or just kill stuff and check for chest until the public event hits and then on to the next. I spend a lot of time by myself nightly after work to unwind and just run stuff like that. All of this said here is what it leads into..Cryptarch - running all this stuff and killing stuff you get engrams engrams and engrams.....turn them in to him and see what ya got. My legendary item I got was in a blue engram. stuff you don't need either save it in your vault for your alts or dismantle for parts and glimmer. keep your highest level armor piece but bank or dismantle the others. Same for weapons and also for weapons be aware of what sysmbol it has as well. There are void weapons(purple swirl), sun weapons (flame) and I don't know the name of the third but it's a blue sysmbol. These are key in killing the hard beasties that also drop engrams as well as the little triangles that most times have ether seed or banners to turn in for stuff too. Everytime you level up with the Cryptarch you get a package from him thru the mail person that you open and it contains engrams to turn in and those can have legendary and or rare stuff as well. I know that's a lot but turast me you will learn what I am saying from doing it. Also I do research on YOutube but only using most recent stuff cause they do update the game with patches and stuff to fix exploits.
