Ok so now that I have my civic I decide that eventually I'm going to make my celica more powerful. I want some opinions on it. Right now I have two things I'm looking at doing. The first thing is turboing my engine. My engine can run about 8psi safely. This should be good for around 200ish hp at the crank. The other option is a NA 2.0 liter engine with around 200hp called the 3sge beams. It has 7000 redline and is similar to a vtech engine where all the power is in the top end. Here are the pros and cons as I see them. Just tell me what you guys think.
Turbo Pros:
Part availability
Learn fabrication skills
Maadd turbo power
Have an engine I built my self.
Turbo Cons:
Expense might be more than the Beams
ECU tuning will be a bitch
Not as easy to do as the Beams
Requires a lot of fabrication
Beams Pros
Easy swap with minimal wiring
Reliable as my current engine
It's a very very pretty

Beams Cons:
All the power is in the top end which is fun in its own way but hard to use on the road.
JDM engine which mean parts will be harder to find.

Turbos are best left to the pros on installs. It's not novice territory. Dropping in a purpose built N/A would be better to cut your teeth on. It would also be better in the longevity / driveability realm too. If you want a little more power, add a bottle. It would be cheaper. Any way you look at it, you're in for a ton of wallet lightening.

Can I get a linky to this group? I'm on mobile :(

Is it bad that I immediately thought of GTA5 when I read the title? 0_0

Street Fighter 2 Turbo Edition, obviously.

Both Option are good But turbo are fun, turbo lag is not I would recommend bring it tuned at a propershop. That engines nice but parts been hard to find is a problem

Edited by DesticleStomper6: 7/30/2014 9:49:36 PMDidn't you say that you wanted your celica to be "JDM"? If so go with the beams engine. Turboing sounds good but I would want something that has a little more potention and that could safely handle more psi than that.

No offense but I stopped reading after I saw the word civic. Let me know when vtec kicks in yo.

Get rid of the celica, turbo the civic...

Edited by One Epic Phail: 7/30/2014 3:35:07 PMTurbo will require a lot of work a non turbo'd 4 banger It's not just about how much pressure the block handle, but how it will effect the reliability on everything else in your drivetrain. Also once you go boost, you'll eventually want to crank your boost up, and that will require getting more heavier duty parts for your drivetrain to handle the boost. The one thing people don't tell you is that boost can be a money pit if you're not careful(always breaking stuff, etc) That said I'd probably stick with the turbo, N/A 4 cylinders are boring otherwise IMO
Maadd
I see you've been watching MCM. :) As for the question posed, is the engine newer than your previous? It being a JDM engine, would it be less than the turbo kit?

Turbo

Bro, you can never go wrong with turboing a engine.
Notice the bro at the start of the sentence to demonstrate a state of superior knowledge.
Turbo a 3sge!

What are you planning on fabing with the turbo? I ask because I assembled the exhaust manifolds, turbo flange, and downpipe for a turbo on a LA1 engine. Found that the quality of homemade exhaust work in such tight quarters limited the ability of the turbo and I was better off purchasing a plumbing kit (though, in my defense, kits didn't exist for this engine until a few months after the project). Turbos can be fun, but make sure you have an improved exhaust first. All that extra air in is going to need extra space to get out, or you'll back your engine up and rob it of significant horsepower.

3s-gte. Best of both worlds and they arent impossible to get parts for. Or just put a nice ported gsr motor in that civic and be much happier.

Another pro about the beams is that it usually comes with a trans that has a lsd.
It has 7000 hp redline
What's a 7000 HP redline?! In all seriousness, I would prefer an NA engine making 200HP then a turbo making the same power. With an NA engine the power is always there, there's no lag and no heat soak. But if having that low end power is something you really want, then the turbo is a good option. Either way you'll be making more power and having more fun. Just don't go crazy on the turbo, a car with higher mileage might not be able to handle as much power.

Damn it I forgot to add a tag.
