So on my 914 I'm thinking of swapping the ignition system to an electronic ignition. Has anyone ever done that, and if so is it worth it?

No. A car as well built, beautiful, and exotic as a Porsche should never have something changed. Well, in my perspective that is how it should be as someone who grew up riding around, and now driving in Lamborghini's, Ferrari's, Porsche's etc...

Remember the '72 Mach I I have spoke of before? It had a racing dual point distributor when I got it. After I rebuilt it, I pulled an electronic and ignition module from a a '77 truck with a 460. Reason being, hotter spark, more consistent firing, way easier to tune and do maintenance on. I also put on a new cap and rotor with brass contacts again for better spark. It may not appear like an enormous change, but everything about the engine was about making it better, and getting the most out of it for the least dollar investment. The head work and larger cam were the only internal replacements besides rings and crank bearings. It was a very healthy motor when I was done.
