Mr.Regular takes a look at an American legend, the Buick Grand National. What seems like a dark antihero of a car, is really a joyful puppy. I love the GN there's just something about it that's just so right. Plus it has my favorite emblem ever.

Ah, memories. My buddy bought one brand new back in the day..... to beat my '86 Mustang GT. He had a reverse Smokey & the Bandit (Gold rather than Black) T/A 6.6, which my GT never had any issue in defeating. BENCH RACING TIME!!!!!
Well he was a machinist, with money,...... Bought the GN, chipped it, put in the turbo vacuum bi-pass valve, and the thing was just unstoppable for that era. I had a wreck in my GT, totaled it, bought an '83 GT to replace it, but it was never as fast. After a year I sol it and bought a '71 Mach I with a 429 in it for the express purpose to become top dog in our group again. After rebuilding and reworking the engine, we ran them. Once. He left me (since the Mach only had a single track rear end, 70's poly glass radials) for I could not go full throttle from the start. I had to roll into it a little ways before matting it. But by half way through the run, I caught him. After getting around him I noticed that the speedometer was pointing straight down. It only went to 120, and the 120 indicator was as the 5 o'clock position on the speedometer..... So yeah. The front end of the car got light and I lost the ability to steer for a second or 2. I thought I was going to die and let off the gas. After we reconvened, we had figured that we went for around a mile in total. I'll never do that again with a car not properly prepare to run at those speeds.
A year later I got married and my friend let us use the GN for the honeymoon. I had driven it on several other occasions for I was the only friend he trusted driving it. It was a beast, but I could just never get over the sedan look of it. Had it been a sportier car I would have been hooked. I respect it's place in car history, but there was just something about it's body design that never clicked for me.
