Felt this was best placed in a group of Halo Lore-Masters. Spoilers and angry ranting ahead. Apologies.
I'm about three quarters of the way through Glasslands, and it's just god-awful. I don't even know what to say about it other than to say that I'm appalled by the way that Halsey is being portrayed throughout the entire book.
Just so you know I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon here, I was dismissive of what I'd heard about Traviss' portrayal, and was rather optimistic about what it would actually be. Now I can see for myself that Halsey has been turned from cool, calm, in-control, and dedicated to saving the Spartans she had left, into some sort of whiny, self-centered, psychopathic bitch concerned only with saving herself and benefiting from the events at Onyx. And the part with Lucy finally breaking her silence? Are you -blam!-ing kidding me??!?!!! This "Halsey" is written so goddamn out of character, it's flat out ridiculous, and it makes me want to cry knowing that this shit is now considered canon for the universe I love. For the first time ever (and when I say that, I mean it) I can't physically read some of this. I have to skip over it just to continue the story. What the actual hell, 343? It's like Karen Travesty had some sort of personal bitch vendetta against her, and was using this book as a way to rage against Halsey!
While my anger is by no means done, this post is getting too long. I have to ask. Is the rest of the Trilogy like this? Did I waste my money on a set of books I won't even be able to stand reading, or is the first the sole sufferer of Traviss' inexplicable wrath?

I have yet to read Mortal Dictata, considering I've just started Game of Thrones, but I hopefully will before H5. I love the K5 trilogy. It's so much better than most of the books from the Bungie era. It has so many more dimensions than just hopeless and unending, 'gritty' human militaria: there's subterfuge and morality and Sangheili society. And I'm really glad with what 343 has done with Halsey. I even still like her as a human being, but now she's actually rounded and not just Bungie's infallible Mary Sue. Now the moral ramifications of her actions are catching up with her, both externally and internally, and it's fascinating to see.

I didn't think it was that bad, although I did hate Traviss' apparent vendetta against Halsey.
-
the only reason i was able to make it through Glasslands was because i gave half a damn about the mini-spartans.

WHATS KILO-FIVE?

Calm down dear.

Edited by Xiphos119: 7/2/2014 5:30:56 PMTotally agree with you on the Halsey subject. Traviss can be a good author at some points but here's one of her traits which personally annoys me. She seems to want to explore the darker side of the good guys but when she does it, she tends to go over board with it. She did it with the Jedi, the COG, and now the UNSC. I get she wants to make the good guys have flaws. I really do. But she has an almost obsessive vendetta against the good guys (she even went out of her way in an interview to basically call Jedi -godwinslaw!-.) The more I reflect on her work the less I like her. I think the only thing I really like is her expansion of Mandalorian lore in the Republic Commando series. Back on topic: I've yet to read the last two books of the Kilo-Five trilogy. I plan to at some point, but at the same time I don't want continue down this path of Halsey bashing and unnecessary deception from the UNSC. I get 343 wants to expand the lore and all but I personally think they've been handling the universe pretty poorly. I know some people like it, and as I've said several times I'm glad for them and am slightly jealous because they can adapt to the changes. I'd like to like what 343 does, but I just cannot.

Well, I started reading the Thursday War and I couldn't finish it. Hell I don't even think I finished the first chapter. I just put the book down, and that was that. However, I hear that she did a little better on the last novel in the series.

I felt utterly disgusted about how she made the humans SPOILER back stab the elites, especially since Halo 3 left off on the note that they would be working together afterwards to better each other. I agree with you about Halsey. Traviss has ruined a character that I actually sympathised with, just like how 343 ruined the Didacts personality.

I was interested in Glasslands after finishing Onyx, but then I read the reviews.

I hated Glasslands. Started reading the Thursday War and became disinterested. Can't remember how Halsey was portrayed in it, but I only got about 30 pages in before getting bored.
