Anyways the Ontario Medical Association is calling for federal governments to try and curb antibiotic resistance before it becomes too big of a problem, and antibiotic resistance IS becoming a problem.

Drug-resistant tuberculosis is becoming a huge problem in eastern Europe and could spread into Asia and the rest of Europe and tuberculosis is already endemic in southeast/south Asian nations such as India and Burma which could also exacerbate the issue of drug-resistant tuberculosis strains.

There's also NDM-1, a bacteria strain which is resistant to 15 differtent antibiotics which have been found in puddles in New Delhi, India and New Delhi's water supply.
Anyways, if your doctor prescribes antibiotics follow the damned directions and complete the prescribed dosage dammit.
There's too many idiots who already neglect antibiotic directions and think "Oh I feel better now I think I'll just stop taking my antibiotics." or "I think I'll save the other half of these antibiotics for the next time I get sick."
Also, if you get a fever, wait three days, if your fever is gone in three days or if your condition improves drastically then it means you have a viral infection which doesn't need antibiotics. Or go to the doctor but he/she might just tell you the same thing I just said.
Any thoughts?

Even if some bacteria becomes completely immune, it could still be killed with extreme heat or extreme cold. They aren't invincible.

Customer: Do you have any soap? Cashier: Aisle 24. Customer: No, that's all regular soap. I want antibacterial soap. Cashier: It's the same soa- Wait, what? Why? Customer: Because it's cleaner. Me: You're a stupid -blam!-ing bitch.

No need to worry about North Korea, If we don't sort this out now things are going to get bad very fast. But hey, Antibiotics don't make money so let's not make them. Because it is more profitable to have all your customers die out. >.<

*ahem* My humble proposition...

Edited by Gabriel Eisen: 3/31/2013 3:52:03 AMCarbapenem restistant enterobacteriaceae is widespread with an estimated 50% mortality rate in patients with compromised immune systems. Carbapenem, one of the most potent antibios agents known, works by "Interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding protein (PBPs), enzymes which are essential for cell wall synthesis." An evolutionary battle wages on.

I don't think that bacteria is getting more resistant. Rather, the already existing and resisting types are becoming more prevalent as other types die off. Still a problem that may result in a plague.

Edited by xH u 7V tt 3 R: 3/27/2013 7:34:54 PMMy spanish teacher was talking about something like this earlier. Like there is some element in hand soap that makes you more resistant to antibiotics. Which medicines could be classified as antibiotics? Also, I'm pretty sure we had this coming, we are not supposed to be in control of many things, although we can control them.

There's got to be some smart high schooler out there that will find out how to immunize humans from all of the harmful types of bacteria with no need to constantly change the drug. It's scary to think that we really have very little control over this problem, but humanity has surprised me before so hopefully it will do it again.

Edited by HurtfulTurkey: 3/27/2013 3:18:09 AMIt's not a huge problem in first-world countries because we can keep up with adaptations, but it's crippling to poorer countries. Pretty embarrassing that we still have people scared to get flu shots here with people dying from diseases that have supposedly already been cured in impoverished nations.

It's so frightening to think about. We seriously need to do something about this.

Dammit who is playing Pandemic!?

Evolution at work. The bacteria that aren't resistant to the antibiotics die, and the resistant bacteria now have more resources for themselves and multiply. What might have began with 3 or 4 individual bacteria with that trait before might result in millions of resistant bacteria later.

Vitamin C cures fevers better than antibiotics anyway thats what I do cures it in 24 hours every time

my thoughts: TAKE ALL YOUR ANTIBIOTICS OR YOU ARE A BIOLOGICAL TERRORIST! in all seriousness, living bacteria or cells mutate if they arnt killed leaving the responsibility that you created a more drug resistant strain of the Rhino Virus rests on your shoulders.

I've read quite a bit about all this. It's some scary shit.

Seems like one of the scarier challenges we face now.
