Yeah, so Russia is alarmed because of that asteroid which passed by today and because a meteor crashed into Russia yesterday. There's also the Tunguska Event when a meteor blew up in midair over Russia in 1908.
I support this, an anti-asteroid system is the first step to having orbital defense grids and militarized spaceships against hostile extra-terrestrial forces.
Any thoughts?

It's a little late for that.
-
Would be nice, but what would they do? Nukes aren't going to do anything good. You're going to need to find a way to push it away.
-
Yeah, we should have a defense grid. Better to be safe then... well... blasted into a pool of molten slag by an asteroid imact...
-
I think it is a good idea but requires so much funding.
-
Eh, pretty infeasible at the moment. Can't see it happening unless a large threat was detected.
-
Who needs an International Anti-Asteroid Defense System when we have Bruce Willis?
Perhaps not militarized spaceships, but orbital defenses and programs very similar (almost exactly) to drop ship troopers (like in Spaceship Troopers) are a reality. The main goal of an anti-asteroid program would likely be a spaceship which would simply latch on and push it out of the way, rather than using ICBM's to blow it up. Doing that results in a whole bunch of meteoroids, and if it's an ELE (Extinction Level Event) then chances are the ICBM wouldn't be able to have enough power to blow it into small enough pieces to be destroyed in orbit. Not to mention the issues with radiation in upper atmosphere, and the EMP blast's damage to orbital satellites.

I support this, an anti-asteroid system is the first step to having orbital defense grids and militarized spaceships against hostile extra-terrestrial forces.
Wat. I doubt the technology exists as of now, so I'll wait to cross that bridge when it comes to it.

We don't have the technology to accurately track all asteroids of such a small size as the one that his Russia, let alone the sophisticated targeting systems to do anything about asteroids that actually do get detected. Without belittling the cost of human life, it's financially and logistically unfeasible to pursue that technology.
-
Just use advanced missiles to blow them up when detected. Enough that it turns into pieces small enough to burn up in the atmosphere. And that's all.

Edited by Ric_Adbur: 2/17/2013 7:31:33 AMThough we have gotten good at detecting near-earth objects in recent years, and are getting even better all the time, the fact remains that we are still discovering new objects, previously-unrecorded, whose trajectories bring them extremely close to our world. It's not inconceivable that, despite our best efforts and the advantages of modern technology, we might be unaware of potential threats to our planet until a relatively short amount of time before they impact. The most prudent course of action, therefore, is to have a plan ready to be enacted beforehand, in case such a scenario ever arises.

I have many thoughts and most of them are about food.

Wait wait wait. Did NASA know about this meteor?

Edited by Ninja Guardian: 2/15/2013 9:31:47 PMOkay, for those who think this is a waste of money, well then you're short sighted. This is a good opportunity for the World's space agencies to flex their muscles and show us what they can do. Yeah America isn't footing the bill solely and if such a project happens and it would barely measure a blip on your taxes. Besides, space is the future and we should be investing as much as we can into it.
-
Oh that's right, the earth isn't impervious to fast moving space rocks. Yeah I wouldn't mind this at all.
-
Awesome, it's about time. 500 people got injured and this wasn't even supposed to get close to us. It's time we start looking to protect our planet from Orbit. As long as we keep it facing away from the skies. Make sure a separate, universal faction is made to be in charged, comprised of people different places. Control of that be used only with united codes or something and any overrides taken very seriously. Or we can build a giant shield? Why do we never build giant shields?
-
If NASA, the ESA and the Russians put their heads (and budgets) together, they could accomplish a lot more than an orbital asteroid defense platform.
-
I would be for it only if Iran and North Korea spearhead the program with their super advanced technology.
-
NASA already has an Anti-Asteroid system. And with Lockheed Martin announcing their new laser weapon system a few months ago all Russia has to do is show up with a very big check and they got themselves a Anti-Asteroid system.
-
How the hell would we pay for this?
-
Who's floating that bill?
-
I am not opposed to this.
-
You what is the best anti-asteroid/matter shielding defense system we have? The Moon
-
we would not use it very often and it would cost way to much to keep running for long periods of time.
-
You support this? LMAO! You paying for it then? Taxes are outrageous enough as it is.
-
Cool.
