Today I'm here to talk about something that a lot of people out there like: money.
Since none of this stuff is mentioned anywhere except for the few economy grimoires (and even then not all of it is mentioned), I figured this would be a good topic to cover. I will go over currency and then upgrade materials.
Currency
Glimmer: Glimmer is matter broken down into a state that can be programmed to form materials used for constructing weapons, vehicles, buildings, etc. The technology to transform matter into Glimmer was created during the Golden Age, and with it humanity could build anything they wanted to much more easily.
By the time the Collapse ended and the Dark Age began, Glimmer was scattered all over and can be found in abundance at any given location in our system. Even the Fallen collect Glimmer they find while scavenging and use it to build their machines.
Glimmer technology can even be used to turn equipment into a solid prism form known as engrams, where the equipment will remain in an unchangeable Glimmer state until reprogrammed back into the specific object it used to be.
Glimmer is amazingly abundant, but because of the Tower's constant use of it there is always demand for more.
Appears as tiny, light blue, glowing bits.
Vanguard Marks/Legendary Marks: a currency developed by the Vanguard for Guardians to earn and exchange for valuable pieces of equipment. Guardians who accomplish significant victories out in the system are given these coins to purchase gear from the Tower's inventory.
Vanguard Marks appeared as grey coins bearing the Vanguard insignia, but the currency changed to Legendary Marks that appear as purple coins with gold decorations (the Destiny logo is one of the golden images on it).
Crucible Marks (no longer circulating): Shaxx awarded these for performing impressively in the Crucible so skilled Guardians could purchase better gear from Shaxx and Faction representatives.
Appeared as red coins bearing the white crossed-swords Crucible symbol.
Silver: an Eververse Trading Co. currency, these coins were once used in the pre-Collapse human colonies of the Reef, and after being collected by Tess and Fenchurch Everis were put into circulation amongst the Reef and Tower. These coins share qualities similar to engrams and could be signed in to a specific person's key or account.
Appear as ornate silver coins.
Strange Coins: mysterious and uncommon objects that can be scavenged around the system and traded to Xûr, Agent of the Nine, for Exotics and other valuable equipment. Their origin, actual function, and value to the Nine are unknown.
Appear as odd coins with a green orb in their center and a golden ring around its circumference. Always emit a dull and unusual ringing noise.
Exotic shard: a powerful remnant of dismantled Exotic gear that appears as a glowing green shard. Used to improve Exotic equipment.
Motes of Light: points of focused Light that the Speaker will happily trade Class wares for, but what he uses them for is unknown.
Appear as brightly glowing orbs of white Light.
Upgrade Materials
Weapon parts: pieces of dismantled weapons that can be used to improve other weapons.
Plasteel plating, sapphire wire, hadronic essence, and armor materials: pieces of dismantled armor that can be used to improve other pieces of armor.
(Plating=Titans, wire=Hunters, essence=Warlocks)
Spinmetal: composites of a light yet strong material created by Golden Age machinery that was not stored. Found on Earth and used to improve certain equipment.
Helium filaments: energy-storing filaments formed by solar coils on the Moon that are used to improve certain equipment.
Spirit bloom: an odd product of the flora of Venus, possibly caused by Vex influence on the plants. Used to improve certain equipment.
Relic iron: an extremely dense material found in deposits on Mars that is used to improve certain equipment.
Wormspore: a mutation catalyst found on the Dreadnaught that reacts to both the Light and Darkness. Used to improve certain equipment.
Hadium flake: metal that stores away any energy it is exposed to. Found on the Dreadnaught and used to improve certain equipment.
Chroma: an Eververse Trading Co. item, Chroma was a Golden Age technology rediscovered by Fenchurch Everis and is used to accentuate armor and weapons with colorful touches of light.
Ascendant shard: "a self-stabilizing knot of spacetime geometry."
Material born of the secrets of the Golden Age and the Traveler's power. Obtained in raids and occasionally other activities and used to improve certain transcendent equipment.
Ascendant energy: "the boiling energies of the zero-point field trapped in a stasis capsule."
Material born of the secrets of the Golden Age and the Traveler's power. Obtained in raids and occasionally other activities and used to improve certain transcendent equipment.
Radiant Shard: "a primordial singularity frozen on the edge of evanescence."
Material born of the secrets of the Golden Age and the Traveler's power. Obtained in raids and occasionally other activities and used to improve certain transcendent equipment.
Etheric light: "A volatile synthesis of energized matter and self-modifying energy constructs."
Obtained in raids and occasionally other activities and used to improve certain equipment.
Radiant energy: "a light of particle-antiparticle annihilation, trapped in a stasis capsule."
Obtained in raids and occasionally other activities and used to improve certain equipment.

Rip plasteel plating, sapphire wire and hadronic essence. As well as vanguard/crucible marks with their bullshit 100/week limit
-
Nice post, but makes me wonder now why you can't buy everything with glimmer, or indeed sell everything for glimmer.
-
Isn't half of these just the descriptions of the items? lol.
-
I just realized this: all the planet exclusive materials relate to the enemy found on that planet: Fallen: spin metal is bursting out of derelict barrels that used to be used in the golden age. Hive: the helium filaments are dark and broken when you find them symbolizing a lost light. Vex: the spirit bloom is unique and we don't understand it. Cabal: relic iron is dense and hard and has weathered the harsh mars environment.

Just a small correction to the glimmer description my good man...
utterly meaningless
Nice overview and it should be easy for everyone to see that Destiny has way to many currencies. Now we all know the Vanguard is run by a bunch of -blam!-ups, but even they should have a basic understanding of economy! Hopefully D2 will have a simpler economy and hopefully that economy won't be coin and crystal microtransaction crap.

Love how strange coins are uncommon yet I get 200 a week lol.

Here is the problem that I have with Destiny and its economy.. they created so many materials.. many of them are worthess, like siva key fragments, mouldering shards etc.. hell even exotic shards.. once you have used the number you needed and they start to pile up, they have zero value at all. Everything should be able to be broken down to glimmer. Instead, there are items in our inventory that we cannot dismantle and will just sit forever.. I have hundreds of siva key fragments, nearly 160 mouldering shards and 125 exotic shards.. let me do something with these of value.

Wow. Great job Fox.
-
Can we just use gold or something
-
Times are rough out there. Got laid off last week, wife left me. I wish the economy was more stable.

nice post, just one question. how is chroma currency exactly? you don't buy anything with it, you said this post was about money. regardless, great work! keep being awesome Guardian. ^_^
-
Cores from Prison of Elders. Used to get ships, weapons, armor and can be broken down for rep.

You forgot Commendations
-
Nice descriptions keep up the good work.

You forgot the most important one...
THE ASCENDANT RAISINS
Hadium Flakes

Radiant shards

Motes of light can be used to unlock the perks on your gear.
