How Bungie and Its Games Have Positively Affected Your Life

Nine years ago today, I hosted a Halo 2 tournament in college because my student association (of which I was president) faced a budget shortfall and wouldn't otherwise be able to publish our biannual literary magazine. It was a resounding success, and not only did we have enough money to publish the magazine, but we also were able to make t-shirts. It got me thinking. How has Bungie or its games positively affected your life? Other than the obvious that you've had fun playing them, is there anything exceptional that's happened to you because of Bungie or its games? Edit: <3 you guys My story above was just at the beginning of this crazy ride with these amazing people and this community. Overall, Bungie and its games have brought me endless fun, an extended community of people I've come to call some of my best friends, and worlds for my imagination to run free and seek inspiration. They've had a profound influence on me, personally, shaping my life in ways I would never have anticipated.

  • I'm not even in this group, but I'll share my story: In January of 2003 my Army unit got mobilized to Fort Hood, TX in preparation for getting sent to Iraq. We had 30 people with us, no vehicles to get around, and we're stuck in some old, crappy dorms. My roommate and I walked about 2 miles to the PX (store) and each bought an xbox, Halo:CE, extra controllers, and two 17" CRT televisions. The walk back was absolute torture, but once we got the two systems set up back to back with a cross-over cable it was worth it. Night after night we played 4v4 and free-for-all tournaments, keeping everyone entertained and spirits high in a time that it wasn't easy to stay up. We ended up having our Iraq trip cancelled right before we were set to leave, but those guys are still on my friends list and we still play to this day. As an aside, I now play on a 65" flatscreen. How we used to do it on 1/4 of a 17" screen blows my mind.

    • Earlier today I experienced extreme rage when two players played with me in Poe 34, kept me on until the end and, in the end booted me off the fireteam at the end of round 5. I could not collect the loot from the chest. They soon afterwards sent me an email and told me I wasn't good enough that I didn't deserve the loot. I've been playing this game for a while and never have experienced such behavior. Could anyone offer words to calm me down?

      • I started playing Halo Evolved and went from there, Halo was the only game I have ever played on line, now I play Destiny too and it's not too bad. I think these games are great stress relievers from the day to day stuff, and when I met this group of great people, it made it a lot more fun. Im some what of a shy person so getting in a group has helped me too.

      • Destiny has saved my life. I was diagnosed with aids 2 yrs ago from having sex with other ppl and shooting meth. I could not afford the meds they were prescribed me so I was in bad shape. Then one day last October when I was at the shelter picking up my donated meds, some one dropped off a xbox360. I argued with a 12 yr old boy about who should get this xbox. I told him I was dying and I needed It to survive. He finally gave in and I had a xbox. When I plugged it in there was a game already in it. That game was destiny. I played all day everyday off the free wifi at the clinic. I was so happy. I wont bore u with anymore details but destiny has prolonged my life.

        • Halo is what turned me into the person I am today. Without it, I wouldn't have met the friends I did, and I wouldn't know the friends I know now. I miss the Seventh Column, and I miss the people who were in it.

I wouldn't have met this community without Halo. I wouldn't be as close to my brother without halo. I wouldn't have met my local clan mates without halo. I wouldn't have played Halo without Bungie.

(Which is way better than where my money goes online now) back when Katrina hit one of the coolest things I had seen done was Bungie come out with a Katrina relief Halo themed t shirt aptly titled "fight the flood" still one of the coolest charity drives I've ever seen from gamers.

Halo made a pretty big impact on my life and it still carries over to today. To find that the Bungie and its community were just as passionate and hooked as I was was a pretty defining moment. I didn't have a lot of friends that I identified with but the 7th column changed that [even though I'm a lurker]. Bungie crafted and supported universes, characters and experiences that captured and molded my imagination more than just about anything else has managed to do so far. I have managed to get my sister hooked as well (at least on Halo for now). Destiny has been a very different ride for me and I haven't found a way to connect with this new universe as with previous incarnations such as Marathon and Halo etc. I think it's because the culture that existed here prior was one of inclusion- the community felt like a part of Bungie, like we were almost members of the team [almost] but now it feels very sterile and withdrawn- there's not as much spirit and enthusiasm as before and trying to cover it up makes it more obvious to those who know where to look. The community that existed here before the darkness, the pre-launch jitters and excitement for Halo 3, ODST and Reach, the sense of entitlement the blue-bar-babies had since 2007 and the humor and camaraderie of being a member of Bungie's community- these things I hold dear about a website crafted by nerds so that other nerds could come and talk about nerdy stuff like specific video games and the like. Even though this place has changed, I still consider it my online home, I still consider myself a Bungie fan and member of the Seven7h Column and I still think of a lot of you rejects and drunken hobos as my internet family. <3 Ben. P.S: Your Mom is a classy lady. P.S.S: Pimps never die at sea, they're just missing in booty. Hataz walk the plank fo shizzle.

                    • Destiny keeps me way too occupied for me to commit suicide and all my friends I've met on there are some of the best I've had. If I didn't play CE all those years ago I'd probably be dead. Or you know, I'd procrastinate some other way.

At this moment, I'm sitting with around 10 friends I've known since Halo 2/2005. I'm here after a 8 hour drive attending the wedding of two of these friends. I love these bums, and I wouldn't know any of them without Halo 2. Edit: I have appeared to screwed up the link. Will fix later.
