It lampshades the ridiculous things, it toys with previous canon and it's a whole lot of fun. At the very worst, it's the third best Star Trek film (after Wrath of Khan and First Contact, obviously), but with a second viewing it might even be my favourite.
And I -blam!-ing hate JJ Abrams.
I saw it in 2D, so caveat emptor with 3D. (-blam!- 3D) Acting is great from Quinto and Cumberbatch, humour from Scotty and McCoy is good too.
While the last one wasn't always great (I'm looking at you, first 10 minutes), this one is certainly more even in quality and the writing feels better.
Also, the fact that the 12 seconds bit actually takes 12 seconds was great. Makes the film feel more real-time, and the amount they fitted into that time was amazing. I hate it when they say "we have two minutes" and then talk for 10 minutes.
So, yeah, it's good. I'm sure when you Yanks can actually see it you'll agree. ;) Based UK early release dates.

Just saw it. I was very...Hollywood. Not a bad movie though.

Edited by Camnator: 5/18/2013 5:05:00 AMSOOOOOO much happens in the movie, I really enjoyed it, but not quiiiiiiiiite as much as the first one. The 3D was actually good and I don't even remember this 12 seconds thing you mentioned. First Contact was freaking awesome. Actually, I love every Star Trek film.

I watched it today and I thought it was pretty good. I'm not a star trek fan and I don't know much about it but I still liked the movie.

Edited by One Epic Phail: 5/18/2013 5:02:26 AMFinally got to see it tonight Amazing film, better than the first which was nice, and honestly one of the best Star Trek films ever made. Easily makes it into my favorite movies of all time list.
>mfw Khan >mfw the original spock >mfw when I have no face
I had never seen anything Star Trek before this movie, basically my knowledge was the two quotes "Beam me up Scotty" and "Warp speed Mr Sulu". Loved it. Definitely stands alone, as I understood enough to enjoy it.

Liked it overall, but disliked one part in particular:
After the starship / million dollar scene takes place, I was expecting a longer or more fleshed out chase / fight scene with Khan and Spock - like as if Khan had jumped off that second vehicle and onto a building, etc - it just seemed a tad anti-climactic. Also, the whole timeline of the large starship being blown up and the Enterprise halting in the atmosphere was pretty messed up. It takes them like 30 seconds to traverse, in an unpowered ship, simply caught in a gravity well, from roughly the Moon's orbit to Earth's atmosphere. It then takes another 5 minutes for the Enterprise to travel the few dozen km from stratosphere to that cloud layer.
Just seen it. Holy hell, it blew the first film out of the water. A few moments were kind of cringeworthy and we laughed at some of the bits we didn't like. A few plot holes and bad jokes/cringey lines aside, it was amazing. However, I can't think what the 12 second part was you mentioned. See spoiler, Primum:
Was it when McCoy had his arm caught in the torpedo?
Edited by Buona Sera: 5/13/2013 2:16:15 AMOn it's own, seems like a fairly solid film. As an addition to the Star Trek universe... yeah, they definitely took liberties.

I'm seeing it next weekend. How does it compare to the 2009 film?

Planning on seeing it at the midnight release next week. I was thinkin' of wearing my friend's female Captain's uniform, but she wants to wear it... The last movie I saw many times and liked a lot, but I had mixed feelings. It's a great space adventure film, but not that great as Star Trek. It was a fairly generic time travel revenge plot and full of overblown action. The only real Star Trek-iness part was the characters. Like I said, I really enjoyed it, but have mixed feelings about it as Star Trek. But it's all we have, so might's well feel good about it. The old movies aren't going away. Really looking forward to the new one, despite it's seemingly Oh-No-Earth-Is-Threatened-And-The-Enterprise-Is-The-Only-Ship-That-Can-Save-It-So-Let's-Also-Blow-It-Up-Because-It-Looks-Cool plot.

Trying to convince blockmates to see it this weekend.

I loved the first film of this new trilogy, so I am excited for this film

Pretty excited for this movie. The first one was good but after reading all these reviews it seems to blow it out of the water.

I really liked the reboot so I can't wait

I have no interest in the Star Trek universe, but I had heard that as a stand alone film, it was OK.
