US President Barack Obama has unveiled a new initiative to map the brain.
Speaking at the White House, he announced an initial $100m investment to shed light on how the brain works and provide insight into diseases such as Alzheimer's and epilepsy.
President Obama said initiatives like the Human Genome Project had transformed genetics; now he wants to do the same with the brain.
The project will be carried out by both public and private-sector scientists.
The project is called Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies - or BRAIN.
Mr Obama said: There is this enormous mystery waiting to be unlocked, and the BRAIN initiative will change that by giving scientists the tools they need to get a dynamic picture of the brain in action and better understand how we think and learn and remember. And that knowledge will be transformative."
Why is everyone so flustered over this? In relation to the overall government, 100 million isn't that much. Any research going into science is good in my book.

Edited by defnop552: 4/8/2013 1:39:14 AMIn 2013, the direct costs of caring for those with Alzheimer's to American society will total an estimated $203 billion. That's a massive amount when you consider that against the cost of care for cancer(s) patients. This only takes account Alzheimer's patients and there are so many other brain diseases that are pulling so much money out of the economy. I think it's great that they are looking into it. The sooner they find cures for a lot of diseases the better. Sad Fact: My father has had Alzheimers for 7 years, he's only 58 and he's coming to the end of his time. :'(

So wasting more money? If he wanted to do something useful he'd legalize marijuana then BOOM moar moneys!!!!
-
Yay, another 100 million blown on useless shit. Really, is nobody concerned about the fact that we owe more that we're worth?
-
how much is this gonna cost the american people?
-
I've learned that watching Obama is like watching a Wile. E. Coyote cartoon; Something may start out seeming plausible, but all you have to do is wait about 30 seconds for it all to blow up.

People are too quick to forget that out of the 200+ years we've been a country, we've only been out of debt one year. National debt isn't necessarily a bad thing.
-
If we taxed the church we'd get back 74 billion. I think. A year. So why care about whether a small 100 million goes to a good cause
-
I support this, and I'm surprised it passed congress, since they have their hammers hitting everything in sight
-
itt: people who think that science is completely irrelevant to medical $100m isn't that much to the government. Dunno why people's tits are getting so icy in this thread. Also, if the brain research actually takes off, we can kiss many brain diseases goodbye. You know, the thing that kind of controls all of what you do? Yeah, we need that.

"The funds will be directly deposited into what remains of the Solandra accounts."

hooray for science!

My first thought after I read the first couple paragraphs of the article I first read about this was: Where's the lie/catch/under-the-table-financial-beneficiary?
-
I'm sure that murderer is to thank.
-
20 bucks says that 75$ million of that 100 was spent trying to come up with a suitable acronym that made sense.
-
What is sad is most of that money will not go towards the research, but into fat cats pockets.
-
But obama wat about spaec?!

I'm blinded.
-
I like it
-
My first thought is that the right-winged media is going to attack this some how.

A fantastic development. It is very amusing how all the deficit hawks will complain about a small investment into important scientific research but remain silent about the egregious amount of money the government spends on defense.
-
We're drowning in debt and going through budget cuts and stuff and he goes and does this? The government has more pressing concerns.
-
For science! I really like that acronym they thought of. This is some great stuff, but I would honestly prefer it going into either space research or oceanic research. Brain research is cool and all, though.
