Why is Game of Thrones so successful?

I mean the series itself, the books and the tv show. I'm a huge fan of the song of ice and fire series, and I think ASOIF is the new lord of the rings when it comes to popularity and influence. But it does make me curious why this is so much more successful compared to other fantasy novels. Is it just because they made a tv show about it, which for obvious reasons exposed the work to a much larger audience? Is the story just much better written then most other fantasy novels, characters more interesting, it's a more realistic and gritty form of fantasy which appeals to more people? I would say it would be a combination of all those factors personally. If you are a fan of the series, what do you like the books and/or the show so much, and why is it better then other fantasy novels?

Does it have violence? Does it have nudity? We humans are pretty easily entertained . . .

  • On second thought, it's definitely the incest that makes Game of Thrones so good...

  • The story and characters are really well fleshed out. There is backstory for pretty much everything and everything locks into each other pretty well. I suppose it's also because there are a lot of fantasy elements in it, for the nerds, and a hell of a lot of politics, backstabbing, power games, mind games and petty squabbles and character flaws. It's a genuinely good piece of drama. The tv series is very good, as it is so faithful to the books, but the books themselves are on a whole other level. Can't wait for the next book.

    • TBH I only decided to read the books because I had heard about the tv series with all the sex and violence. So I would definitely say that the tv series has massively increased the popularity of the books and without the tv series, there wouldn't be any merchandise etc or a Game of Thrones 'brand'. Ironically I have read all the books and love them but haven't watched the tv series even though its sat right next to me. Need to change that soon.

      • I think it is the fact that it has a very good TV show that is very faithful to the books. Fans of the books will like the TV show, and the high quality of the show will attract a large audience. I think the overall reason is because it is a very well-written series (both the books and TV) and not just because it is a dark and gritty fantasy story.

        • Because it's not cliched and predictable (unlike most fantasy novels). It's also dark and gritty and, as far as fantasy goes, realistic. And the characters are mostly very well written.

          • It's because they made a TV show of it. I don't think The Walking Dead would have been as popular as it is if they hadn't made the show.

              • It's well written, deals remarkably well with the human condition despite fantastical aspects in the story and has great characters in that, whilst the villains are detestable and the heroes likeable, everything is not portrayed in black and white but rather in various shades of grey. I haven't watched past episode three of series one on the TV show so don't know why it's popular.

              • The books aren't well written enough for my taste, and their content isn't deep enough to interest me. I watched a little bit of the show and I found it depressing and pointless. We already have a surplus of media dealing with people being assholes and screwing each other over for no good reason, it's called 'The News'.

              • Its an awesome show but I feel like there's a lot of things i would have done differently had I worked on the show not book, they need to show more of calisi(is she not the hottest on the show?)

              • I have no idea. I personally think the show is boring as hell. I watched the entire first season and was bored to death. I kept watching hoping it would get better, but it didn't.
