As I'm a total novice, I've opted for a simple 3-channel helicopter with standard aerial. None of that 2.4Ghz stuff just yet, and until I'm happy controlling a 3-channel, 4 is out of the question. Should arrive in a few days, so I'll get some practise in and show it off when it gets here, assuming I can fly it!
Anyone else into RC helicopters? Anyone got any hobby-level gear? If I properly get into this and have the skills needed, I'll look at a higher-power, 3D chopper.

I used to have a remote control dragonfly. Does that count?

I have one very similar to this.

I actually used to regularly fly RC gas powered airplanes. I was also really good with helis on the G3 RC simulator, but I liked planes more. I stopped flying them mostly because I'm flying real airplanes now, and that takes up both my time and my money. Hell, gas in Chicago can cost $8 a gallon for 100LL. I get it for 6 but it's still expensive. I'm also into amateur radio which can be a bit pricey too.

I started with those cheap and crappy little indoors ones, and now I have a decent 4 channel one that is a tonne of fun.

I have a cheap indoor one that can fire two little plastic "Rockets" done up in Army Camo. My dog hates it.

First..? Did you ever have a childhood? I've had a ton of cheap ones. I never saw the need to get an expensive one because I crash every time I fly an RC helicopter. It's still fun though.

I'm more into RC cars, myself. However, I haven't had one of those in ages...
-
I got one for my Confirmation. an FA-005. Stable, cheap, but not extremely good in the wind.
-
I think i am going to get one now, seems like a lot of fun. My remote controlled Tiger tank will have to wait...

Only helis I've had are the cheapo indoor 2-channel type, but they're fun as hell, especially if you have cats. I got to be pretty good with one of those and started looking into going bigger, but then life got in the way of all that for a while. Switching from helis to cars, I also have a Traxxas Revo 3.3, which is sick, but I haven't played with it since Reach was a new game, and that is something I ought to correct soon, really . . .

On Amazon.com i got an Apache for 35$ that works great!
-
I would like one but my history with flying RC vehicles hasn't been particularly great.
-
Protip: Your gonna crash I would haves tarted with something a little smaller to learn the basics. I've seen the results of not knowing how to fly them and the results are expensive. I started with a little Radioshack helimichopper. Fun little bird to fly.

I had a really bad one when I was young, it rose way too fast (to the point it would always just hit the ceiling) and it had really poor battery life.
-
I've wanted to build a quadrotor for a while now.
-
I've always wanted one of those. They're so cool. I did once have a tiny RC submersible, though.
-
I got one of those in my office at work. The battery has died, but they're pretty fun to mess around with.
