Is it unreasonable for console manufacturers to take measures to prevent used game sales?

It's not confirmed as yet, but it's entirely possible that both Sony and Microsoft could take measures to prevent used game sales with their new consoles. The prospect of this is obviously abhorrent to the big game retailers because they make a killing off used games sales and I've heard many claim that to take such measures would be anti-consumer. However, would it really be such an unreasonable move?Used game sales arguably have a greater detrimental effect on the games industry than piracy because while you can never prove that a pirated game represents a lost sale, it is a fact that used games (which publishers/devs never see a cut of) are often sold in place of brand new copies at retailers such as GameStop (they might knock five dollars off the full price for a game that is in pristine condition, for instance). So given that used game sales represent millions of dollars in net loss for the games industry, we surely can't blame MS and Sony for considering this sort of thing, or can we? Where do you stand on this issue?

  • Let people sell used copies. If people don't to pay $60 for a new copy of a sub-par game, then they shouldn't have to do such a thing.

  • First it's used games, then cars, then eventually you won't be allowed to date non-virgin women.

If I obtain a legal game for a console, I should be able to play it. No exceptions to that rule. It's done with movies. It's done with computer software. It's done with music. Microsoft and Sony would only be strengthening my future aversion of the next generation of consoles. What happens in the future, when the upcoming generation of consoles becomes the past? How will I obtain an old game if it has been discontinued?

      • I buy most of my games new anyways... but for the few that I don't, it would suck having to try and find a new copy.

      • I don't really buy the whole "they lose out on money" rationale seeing as that could be applied to any sale of any item. I get they lose out on the potential new sale and their cut of the money but isn't it the same as buying a used car, or trading for an item on Craigslist or something? I don't see any other company or product division complaining. I dunno..that's just the way I see it. I don't own stock or work for any company that sells used games so this wont drastically effect my life. Just means I'll have to buy new games from now on.

        • Used games are ruining the gaming industry. I think it was Heavy Rain that had more Used games played than new games, which set the developer back millions of dollars in revenue, which makes it hard for them to warrant a sequel. Why should devs work hard on a game if most people are just going to buy it cheaper used and they won't see a penny for their effort?

          • They have every right to do so, just as I have every right to not consume their product.

I want to add something to this thread. People will most likely manage to mod their consoles to play used games. Jus' sayin', I know my shit.

            • Guys- try to get new games. If everyone bought 3/4ths of their games new, then we wouldn't have to worry about crap disc quality, and locked games.

            • If the game is a decent amount cheaper than the new version of the game, I'll get the used version but if it's only like a $2 difference I'd rather get the new version.

            • There is a certain level of corporate greed in banning used games from consoles. I think it's more economically and environmentally friendly just to be able to give the game to someone else when you're done with it.

            • While I want to be able to purchase used games, this is nothing new. PC games have been this way forever.

            • I could see them do it in the long run, like how it happened with PC games. They won't do it in 1 step or immediately with the new consoles, that would cause too much bad publicity.

            • Neutral. As I get most (if not all) my games new, I really don't mind online passes and the lot.

              • I think they should take legal action forcing used games retailers to share some of their profits with developers and publishers, unless that is a completely stupid idea for some reason.

I'm all for it. I am very pro capitalism, and pro intellectual property. If an inventor is losing money on either direct or derivative property, the sales should be stopped and the owner compensated. Being against this is being pro-socialism.

                  • It is unreasonable because it doesn't respect my freedom; I want to be able to share what I love with my friends. If I can't lend them a book, a piece of music, a game, a computer program, etc., for them to try it out and see how cool it is, then I won't even buy it.

Like it or not, publishers and developers are not very profitable. Gamers demand extreme quality for games - more content, better graphics, longer storylines, competitive multiplayer - but the cost of a video game inflation-adjusted has not increased from the days of Super Mario. Profit margins have fallen. The only thing that keeps publishers afloat is pushing as many sales as they can - the cost of one "bad" game can ruin an entire studio or publisher. So, they stick with games they know are safe and will sell and don't try to innovate - ala, "Call of Duty" or "Madden 2013". Nearly every single complaint gamers have about what goes on in modern video gaming can be solved by one thing: The gamer looking in the mirror and realizing that they are the driving force of the problem.

                    • I always buy my games new, but I think this is very unreasonable. That's like it becoming impossible to sell used books, cds, or dvds. They would essentially be destroying an entire market of gamers. Microsoft wont do it because people that get used games may stop buying a LIVE subscription if they can no longer afford to buy games.

                      • I've never seen any reason to buy a used game you only save 5 dollars. So go ahead and destroy all used games and I'll enjoy my fresh new video game where I know no one has wiped there balls on my case and cd.

                      • They should not be allowed to do it, it's theft. If I want to give a game away, or share it with a friend, I should be able to. This kind of BS is like if you got a code to activate your vacuum cleaner and it wouldn't work in any other home but yours. It's absolutely ridiculous, and the government should take measures to make it illegal.
