I am overwhelmed by the amount of support for these ideas, and at the request of a number of people I am re-posting this as its own topic to further the discussion.
First all credit to @Goodice123 who started this conversation with his question on whether people would buy Ghost specialist shells from Xur if he offered them for 20 strange coins.
My addition to that line of thought was on making the Ghost shells practical in addition to cosmetic. My initial thoughts follow below:
What I would really like to see with Ghost shells is that they eventually gain the ability to grant slight augments to your character.
Imagine if you can buy/find different shells that would allow you to do simple things like....carry extra ammo of any one given type.
IE:
Ghost Shell: Grenadier - hold extra heavy ammo (akin to the exotics that grant this ability)
Ghost Shell: Specialist - hold extra special ammo
Ghost Shell: Gunner - hold extra primary ammo
You could also get shells that give you other single bonuses like the exotic armour pieces, specific to classes.
(titan) Ghost Shell: Berserker - gain "death from above" perk while this is equipped
(warlock) Ghost Shell: Shadow Wraith - gain an additional drain melee charge while this is equipped
(hunter) Ghost Shell: Burning Light - gain one additional shot with the golden gun while this is equipped
Shells would have colour schemes that match with their class/use, and may even have slightly different models. The warlock shell may have an appearance of being corrupted by the void or something like that.
It's not perfect (game balancing would be thrown to hell and would need re-working, specifically crucible), but I'm sure it's doable. Even if these become exotic bounties to "assemble", or rare loot from specific bosses, I think it would be a brilliant addition to the game.
Feedback from a number of users also prompted conversation around class items, and possibly seeing this type of system implemented there too, to which I answered:
I would love to see class items become more useful. If they implemented the class specific perks, and furthermore (I was unaware that one of the kill bonuses was increased chance to drop class items) it would be really cool if you could get species specific class items that granted perks that are derived from the race that drops it.
IE:
Fallen have a chance to drop - Vandal's Hood (hunter): Your solar grenade now fractures in two on its first bounce
Cabal have a chance to drop - Phalanax Mark (titan): Grant a 5 second over shield when health hits critical levels.
Hive have a chance to drop - Unbridled Rage (warlock): Gain an additional grenade
Again: not perfect - certainly OP without being balanced properly, but something.
Grenadier already exists as a perk in the game that rewards additional grenade energy when you successfully kill someone with melee, so that particular skill needs to be renamed.
Outside of that I would love to see this idea continue to evolve, and gain enough traction that Bungie takes notice of it.
Bump if you agree, and comment with your own ideas on how this idea should evolve!

This isn't near enough to the top. Bumpin' again!

Awesome but as a hunter bladedancer I feel left out lol

Re-bump.

Some of these perks rival exotic perks, which is entirely overpowered. If something like this was implemented, the perks would have to be small enough to balance, but large enough to feel like they are making a difference in gameplay. Since the main function your ghost serves is reviving you and opening doors, the shells would likely have perks associated with those activities. Providing a 15 second over-shield immediately after activating something with your ghost seems more sensible to me. Logically, you wouldn't have room to store an extra grenade on a ghost (Unless you can use your ghost as a one-time grenade and be rid of him completely.. Which I'm totally for).

Edited by krakn: 2/10/2015 12:07:33 AMSounds mostly a good idea but I'd settle for a different shell that just looks different as a starter for 10

Both ghost shells and class items giving a bonus is a great idea. Even if it isnt a perk affecting damage or defense, boosts to stats, intell disp strength, would be a huge upgrade. Even if it was 5-10 points still makes them more useful than they are now. I mean how long did bungie expect us to care about class items that barely make a cosmetic change. At least this is an incentive to seek out different ones.

Bump! Dig the idea, it makes tons of sense

BUMP!!

Don't get why we have all the spare slots for ghosts if there isn't a option to get different ones even pointless things like ships have multiple options
-
Bump, as promised! I certainly hope this is seen and implemented.

Bumpatron, our dinkle-bots need some love the only thing they are good for right now is to be yelled at, and opening doors. Real good for that.
-
Bump, The Titan mark would be considered op in PvP though. Hopefully if this did pass to bungie they wouldn't change it.
-
Sounds like you need to go play borderlands bro.

Great post. Bump

bump great idea's

Why are we not funding this ???

I've always wanted the class items to be worth something, that and the ghost shells and the ships. Kind of like the sparrows: increase in durability and speed etc

I like it
