The range makes you get too close to enemies and they don't do enough damage. You wouldn't use them on tier 1 adds(in specifically thinking thrall) because you could only kill like 4 then have to retreat and reload. I wouldn't use them in anything harder because it wouldn't put out enough damage to warrant using it. Any other weapon is better, always.
