Exactly! My real shotgun has significantly better range than the one in the game. At the distances where the shotgun is effective, so is my melee, and the shotgun is harder to land, making the melee more effective at clearing the immediate vicinity. That leaves something with more effective range to occupy the special weapon slot. If it had the range and power of the real thing, it would actually be useful in the game.
