Because it seems that rather than having weapons designers actually talk to a real life gunsmith, watch an actual video of the weapon in use or, you know, go out to a gun range and fire one, they listen to specific complaints of those PvP gamers who cannot fathom/accept that a shotgun is lethal out to a range that they find unacceptable. A 12 gauge shotgun with a cylinder bore (no choke) 18" barrel; firing a 2.75" shell with 9 hardened 00 buckshot balls (each equivalent to a .380 bullet) can be effective (depending on the target of course) out to 20 yards (60'); at that distance, the spread is only approx. 12" in diameter. This means only 6" above, below, and to the left and right of, your original aim point. Firing at say, 25'-30' means you can do serious damage to an effing bear. Being told that a shotgun (in Destiny) is only viable out to lunge melee range (+/- 5') is beyond ludicrous.... even if it is Bungie's game. All that being said, I still love my shotguns and do use them in PvE. Also; to be fair to Bungie, they aren't the only video game company I have issues with when it comes to the way shotguns are handled.

  • Of course with the map size we are dealing with real life (range) shotguns would be extremely op. For more realistic PvP battles we would require much larger maps with much more interesting designs. Admittedly I would love that as it would allow for greater weapon selection choice especially if we could get 32v32 etc. Of course with that the noob tube would turn up in Destiny :-)

  • It was Black Ops II and the KSG with slug rounds... d/b/a "Pump Action Sniper Rifle" What really blows is the KSG was my favorite weapon in MW3, but in BLOPS II the only ammo available was slug rounds. WTF?!

  • Yeah... now I remember... the only time I used it was for the achievement to unlock the Diamond skin... That was the most frustrating time of my life trying to get all those kills with that gun.. I just gave in to cratering my k/d....

  • IF we followed weapon rules, there'd be a whole lot less kills from auto rifles and belt fed machine guns.

  • Exactly! My real shotgun has significantly better range than the one in the game. At the distances where the shotgun is effective, so is my melee, and the shotgun is harder to land, making the melee more effective at clearing the immediate vicinity. That leaves something with more effective range to occupy the special weapon slot. If it had the range and power of the real thing, it would actually be useful in the game.

  • They don't care, look at where the hammer hits the cylinder on hand cannons- the top chamber, like in real life. Then look at what chamber is lined up with the barrel- the bottom one. So the hammer is hitting the top round and the bottom chamber is firing? Space magic.

  • This is a design currently in use. I believe it's called the Rhino? It doesn't use a traditional hammer. There are internal firing mechanisms between the hammer and chamber. It's made this way to change the recoil arc.

  • Solid post. People - possibly including Bungie - are generally clueless about how weapons work in real life. I grew up in rural southern Minnesota. Rifles weren't allowed for deer hunting in the area. We had to use shotguns with slugs. I used (and still have) a 12 gauge Ithaca Featherlight. I certainly didn't get within lunging distance of the deer we were hunting.
