Risk reward my friend. In PvE there is no reason to use one. Weak enemies can be killed with primary weapons and strong enemies won't die quick enough. Plus the prevalence of light switch in higher level activities such as nightfall and weekly strikes makes getting into melee range suicidal.
I do hope that this buff makes them more viable in PvE and less prevalent in PvP. I use a shot gun in PvP myself...but only because I feel that the weapon balancing forces me to use one.

I agree... there isn't much incentive to use one, is there? Even with the 2x damage buff the reward just isn't that huge compaired to those 2000-4000 headshots with sniper from SAFE distance.

I might give them another try after the PvE buff. But I'm not sure they will be worth the risk even then. They might be more useful if they received a bonus against shields or something. Then it might be worth it to have one player rush a shielded enemy and drop the shield for a a teammate to finish them off from distance.

Agreed. I've liked most if not all of the balancing changes that they've made so far. I appreciate that they continue to tweak things in order give us more options for how we play.
