In light of the fact that the Scholar of the First Sin DLC is coming out for Dark Souls 2, I thought it might be worth it to give a little background on the first game in order to help understand the second game. This might help some people understand more about what was going on, if they hadn’t figured it out and seen Vaati Vidya’s videos. Keep in mind that a lot of this is speculation, and there is a TON of things to talk about. Each character has their own story, and each environment was shaped with care. I won’t be able to cover everything in this first post, so if you want some more info, just let me know, and I will post it on this thread.
Additionally, there are massive spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t played, or finished, the game yet. This is your only warning.
Now without further ado, let’s get started.
General Summary
Dark Souls opens explaining that the First Flame was basically the beginning of the world as we know it; Light and Dark, Life and Death, Heat and Cold, etc. Four beings found Lord Souls in the First Flame: Nito, First of the Dead, Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight, The Witch of Izalith, and finally, the Furtive Pygmy. Three of these four Lords rose up against the Everlasting Dragons, which had existed since the beginning of time. Additionally, Seath the Scaleless betrayed his kind in a fit of jealousy, killing all those who possessed what he did not.
After the Everlasting Dragons died, the four Lords went onto business as usual in Lordran; Gwyn founded Anor Londo and his reign of Light. Nito went on and became Death incarnate. The Witch of Izalith and her Daughters of Chaos went on to create fantastic Pyromancies in Lost Izalith. Seath, now a Duke because of his valiant efforts, founded the basics of Magic and Sorcery. Nothing was said of the Furtive Pygmy.
However, the Undead begin appearing, and the Fire begins to fade. It is revealed that you are an Undead, locked away in an Asylum. You are freed, however, by a man named Oscar of Astora, who later is found lying on rubble, dying. He gives you the Estus Flask in order to enable your journey, and tells your character about the fate of the Undead: Ring the Bells of Awakening in Lordran.
After escaping the Asylum and being taken to Lordran by a giant raven, you learn (if you talk to Crestfallen), that there are actually TWO Bells of Awakening; one above, one below. So your character sets out to ring both Bells, which is not that simple of a task. After doing so, your character probably found Kingseeker Frampt in Firelink Shrine. He tells you that you must succeed Lord Gwyn, link the flame, and wipe away the Curse of the Undead. To do this, you must travel to Anor Londo and retrieve the Lordvessel. After doing so, Frampt is elated, and shows you Firelink Altar, then tells you that you must collect all of the Lord Souls in order to get inside the Kiln of the First Flame.
Your character goes and kills the legends that had shaped the world, and travels into the Kiln, killing Gwyn, and Linking the First Flame… By burning yourself alive.
But there is another ending, and there is far more meaning behind what you have encountered in Lordran. Here are the links to more information. Read on, and enlighten yourself, dear reader!

This needs a bump.
-
Who exactly was the pygmy? I mean I know he was the ancestor of humans and the chosen undead but other than that I'm kinda lost.
-
Bump for potentially more lore incoming

Bump for lore

The only part of Dark Souls lore that confused me was the stuff about the first flame.. And the souls.. And stuff.. I mean, when the witch/witches did their thing to relight the flame, they created the chaos shi.... Stuff.. But what about Manus? When he tried to do the same, he summoned the creator of the stone dragons and arch trees, Lord Cthulhu, who was also the one who also kills the 4th king in New Land Ruins of you fight the boss correctly.. But who created the first lord souls? Were they just there? I Know! Embers and dark without light and that stuff made them or some crap but, if you read the description of the ring of the situation brothers (can be found in body of the crow after fighting it in the depths) it reads "The slimy one, he didn't for then did he? The power which pillaged the dragons.." A similar description can be read from the stones you get from the covenant of the soaked. (you can find them yourself if you want to know) Did he? A few friends argue with me saying that they were formed after the collapse of the soaked ones. (the servants of lord Cthulhu) There information proves nothing.. The soaked ones collapsed before the extinction of the stone dragons were slain, but you can obviously see Cthulhu riding the fifth dragon to the left on the intro cut scene.. So obviously they dont know the lore... Nerds.. Anyway, tell me what you think.. The info I have given above is a little messy but bare with me..

What happens if I look into my magic sack, and accidentally look at ALL of my human effigies!!! What happens?
-
What's with human effigies instead of humanity in Dks2, and what do embers in Dks3 do for humans?
-
I better see lore about DS3 When the game has been out for awhile
-
Ive been gone from the forums for awhile, time to bump my favorite thread
-
What do you think dark souls 3 will be about? From my speculation dark souls 1 we learned about the cycle of the chosen undead, dark souls 2 we find a way to break the curse by linking the crowns of each kingdom, dark souls 3 I think will be about the return of the age of giants since the trailer shows a king like figure coming out of s grave I think it's the reincarnation of Gywn coming back for revenge on man/undead
-
What is the connection, if any, between the furtive pygmy and Manus, father of the abyss?
-
So what would have happened if the Pygmy had found a different soul?
-
Edited by XenoNinja77: 10/13/2015 11:30:42 PMWhy did the Lords instantly change from emaciated zombies into a functioning civilization just by finding some souls?
-
Edited by A Je5ter: 10/13/2015 7:42:02 PMWhat do we know of the furtive pygmy? It's mentioned in the opening scene of ds1 as being found with nito, gwynn and the witch of izalith but isn't included in the lords who rode up against the endless Dragons.
Bump for knowledge
Ayy lmao
-
How about a bump while I'm in class

Ok so I know this isn't lore related but it's a big issue. I'm on Ng+ and the armorer in majula doesn't seem to be updating its wares.Like he won't sell any boss armor this time it's weird. Is there a certain boss I have to kill?
-
Edited by The banana jet77: 9/26/2015 3:18:00 AMI shall be the eternal bumper of thy thread! Edit: By the way, could you go into detail explaining what the "dark" soul is? I've always had a hard time understanding the Pygmy
-
Dark Souls 3 anyone? Ehh? Ehh?
-
Isn't there a theory that Solaire might be the chosen undead as well?
-
I saw your profile pic and thought Oh god dorit!!

Edited by iInfinityLimit: 9/23/2015 2:59:14 PMWas about to say that has been out for a while now.
\[T]/ praise the sun
Oh, I just realized something.
-
I don't care what fromsoftware says. Theyre all connected. Dark souls degrades into demons souls and demon's souls becomes bloodborne. Obviously centuries pass between each game, but I'm convinced they're the same timeline. Same world.
