If it's only purpose is area denial why would I ever use it when I could just use my solar flare nades and get the exact same effect without wasting my exotic slot

I could see it being useful if you needed more than one or two of them. Grenades take time to regenerate and if you need more right now then you could use it. And as a warlock you could save your radiance for a self-rez rather than wasting it just to have the ability to spam grenades.

You don't have that option if you a hunter or a Titan... And DB does a lot more damage in clearing that area, and the discouraging enemies coming back to it.
-
Unless it's the crota thrall maze I generally don't want enemies running away from me because I'm trying to kill them
-
Then it's not a weapon you would choose. It doesn't make it a bad one. As a warlock there are certainly sometimes I want enemies running away from me. Because PVE warlocks want to stay out of melee range fights.

Well, you have a point, but the explosion is quite strong. As large as Truths radius. I don't play a lock nor do I claim to know enough about the class to argue it. That may be a viable option.

I agree it's a solid and underrated launcher, I actually got one from an engram literally the first day of the expansion so I've used it alot and it certainly decimates mobs, I haven't ever tried it on the thrall maze just cause I avoid using rockets out of fear of blowing myself up but I can see how it would be good for it
-
Because not everyone will use a character with solar grenades.
-
Hunters have trip mine nades, could be used for the same thing, don't care about titans but regardless, seems pretty stupid to waste your exotic on something for "area denial" I don't need to deny any areas if everything is dead

Easier said then done when your defending a sync plate by yourself and facing down a charging praetorian.

Every class has an AOE nade.
