I'm really upset with Destiny's exotic upgrade system. There are no real instructions or fail safes to undoing weeks worth of work.
I had an almost maxed out 331 Ice Breaker that I received two weeks ago, and I went to Xur to buy an exotic shard and finish the upgrade. I used 7 strange coins to purchase a shard, then not knowing any better, purchased the Ice Breaker from Xur that said I needed that shard. It never refused the sale, telling me that I had an identical, highest option weapon already. It just sold me the exact same gun, but with no XP or upgrades.
Now I am out weeks worth of work, 7 strange coins, an exotic shard, 7k glimmer, and my Ice Breaker is useless now in raids until I level it up again.
I've since found one obscure FAQ from Bungie, stating they don't grant back materials, please be careful!? Great advice AFTER someone realizes your upgrade system isn't for newer players/anyone who doesn't troll the internet for user created guides before clicking anything in Destiny.
I feel that this is a huge let down on the developer's end. The game has almost no instructions, uses like 8 different currencies, most with impossibly high drop rates, and I feel that all the work of research and matchmaking is left up to the players. Like we're filling in the gaps, and it's leaving me sorely burned.

You wouldn't find it slightly suspicious that the ice breaker you received a few weeks ago, base damage of 302, would need upgraded to an icebreaker, also at base damage 302, with the same stats? If it was as upgraded as you stated you would have seen that the perks were exactly the same. This isn't bungie's problem, this is a community problem. I mean, is it really that hard to OBSERVE and READ?
