If you're reading this, odds are I've had a debate or conversation with you on here. We might have argued about, agreed upon, or defended something.
When debating or arguing, I keep a strict set of rules. If either side breaks these rules, they lose. It's simple.
My rules are as follows:
1. Stay on Topic (I am bad at this). Deviating means you're avoiding the truth or you're a scatterbrain.
2. Refrain from insults. This is a debate, not a roast session. Insults mean you feel threatened. They're only acceptable if the other person casts the first stone. Use wisely, you may lose control.
3. Emotion has no place in a debate. Emoticons are for people to hide behind. People use them in an attempt to cover their frustration. You can feel strongly about a topic, but do not let your emotions blind you.
4. Listen. You may be wrong. You'll never know until you open your ears.
5. Respect that thought. Your opinions are shit. Mine are shit. Everyone's are, but we need to respect them even if we don't agree. Everyone comes from a different upbringing.
6. Assume they know more than you. This goes along with the listen portion. If they're blowing smoke, go along with it. You'll be able to study their posting patterns and know when they know their shit and when they're full of shit.
There are more, but I'm too tired to post them. If you have debate rules, post them here. sharing is caring after all.

Edited by Seven: 2/1/2015 5:42:08 AMI've made this post as a helpful visual-example-based guide on how to argue at "Oaty"
If that really is her name
I enjoy when linguini is a bit tender actually, its a good sized pasta, sauces very well, but I wouldn't recommend it to an idiot like you ever . Why? Well its because I feel so emotionally terribly about you, you and your stupid avatar just get me so riled up publicly brandishing a weapon. Its past the point at which I even desire to listen to the clacks of shit you type about the screen. I'm quite intelligent, I know, you on the other hand, have proven to have not a single respectable idea. I cannot fathom committing to number 6 without breaking a pre-commited answer

I think number four should be changed to... TAKE YOUR -blam!-ING PUBIC HAIRS OUT OF YOUR EARS

You could use silly formal logic or you could use fallacious reasoning! Here are my rules:
1. Use Extension 2. Use Homonymy 3. Generalize Your Opponent's Specific Statements 4. Conceal Your Game 5. False Propositions 6. Postulate What Has to Be Proved 7. Yield Admissions Through Questions 8. Make Your Opponent Angry 9. Questions in Detouring Order 10. Take Advantage of the Nay-Sayer 11. Generalize Admissions of Specific Cases 12. Choose Metaphors Favourable to Your Proposition 13. Agree to Reject the Counter-Proposition 14. Claim Victory Despite Defeat 15. Use Seemingly Absurd Propositions 16. Arguments Ad Hominem 17. Defense Through Subtle Distinction 18. Interrupt, Break, Divert the Dispute 19. Generalize the Matter, Then Argue Against it 20. Draw Conclusions Yourself 21. Meet Him With a Counter-Argument as Bad as His 22. Petitio principii 23. Make Him Exaggerate His Statement 24. State a False Syllogism 25. Find One Instance to the Contrary 26. Turn the Tables 27. Anger Indicates a Weak Point 28. Persuade the Audience, Not the Opponent 29. Diversion 30. Appeal to Authority Rather Than Reason 31. This Is Beyond Me 32. Put His Thesis into Some Odious Category 33.It Applies in Theory, but Not in Practice 34. Don't Let Him Off the Hook 35. Will Is More Effective Than Insight 36. Bewilder Your opponent by Mere Bombast 37. A Faulty Proof Refutes His Whole Position 38. Become Personal, Insulting, Rude (argumentum ad personam)

If you do any of these, I pity you.
Good rules. I tend to agree with them. But personally, I have a slightly different approach. I do my best to not engage in a debate (where both sides are "trying to win"). Whenever possible, I will phrase my statements, questions and responses in a manner that attempt to turn the debate into a discussion. A discussion on differing views, yes. But a discussion is so much easier to participate in, emotions tend to get less involved, and it's easier to listen and reply when I am talking with someone instead of speaking against them or trying "to change their mind" (which is usually pointless and impossible). I don't mind debate, it can be a very useful way to get points across and highlight the issues at hand. But the line between a debate and an argument is thin and easily crossed, especially online. I prefer a discussion and if possible, would enjoy a conversation even more. But that's just me.

If only everyone followed these.

Also, never use gifs, memes or Internet slang in response to a serious debate/conversation.

I have decided my new way to post whether argument, insult, or shitposty-slime is tricky and wacky and difficult for most all of them now I am trying to rhyme.

People don't jump on the internet to have serious, rational, problem solving discussion. They go their to watch naked people and to feed their ego.

Edited by illqo : 1/31/2015 7:31:30 AMIs it wrong to debate for the sole purpose of exercising that part of your mind and/or to see if the viewpoint that you have even in truth is the same is worth defending. I always try my best to take devil's advocate because it teaches me more about my own viewpoint. I have vehemently argued against points in the past just because I wanted to feel that competition. There is truly something beautiful that happens when someone is debating, it feels like you can see the true them instead of the mask they show all the rest of the time. Edit: sorry forgot to add that I agree with most of these rules.

I wish I knew how to win an argument. It was easy for me once, but usually I can only manage to force my opponents into a stalemate.

This has earned my like of the day. All hail argumentt Kween Oaty
