Is College useless?
I have my bachelors, but out of the literally 800 job applications and 6 interviews, only ONE has asked about my college experience.
I now work at a warehouse making overtime, and I can assure you, they couldn't care less about Organizational Psychology or the Diagnostics and Statistics Manual V4.
I know more than a few people who've never went to college yet make the SAME amount as me....one person my age makes $16 an hour without a degree......
College is 100% useless.

Yes, you probably wasted plenty of time and money, but there's nothing you can do about that now. Surely in your undergrad you learned how to use Excel, Powerpoint, Word, etc, well, and you're a relatively decent typist, because you're a 20-something in the year 2015. [b]New Step 1: Apply to a temp agency[/b] Not very fun, I know. But there's tons of places that always need data entry help in payroll, accounts payable/receivable, human resources, accounting, etc. Depending on where you live, it's not hard to find one of these jobs that pays $12/hr. No, it's not Maserati money. No, it's not a fancy one-bedroom apartment in they city money. But it is money. Even better, they might have temp-to-hire positions where you work there for [x] months then you get hired as a full-time regular employee. Yay benefits! Yay 401k contributions! Is it the perfect job that you wanted? No, but it puts money in your pocket, puts something other than your GPA on your resume, and gives you some work experience. Use that work experience as stepping stones to the field that you want to end up in. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and stop blaming The Man or The System because you made stupid choices. You're an adult now. You're responsible for yourself, nobody else.

Yup .... Because starlight out of high school i made 110k+ for 3 years straight in the oil fields, at 21 had a wife, and child, my own house .... 2000 square foot brand new home .... 4 bedroom, 2 bath on 12k square foot plot of land. 2 living rooms, vaulted ceilings etc ... 2 beautiful brand new lifted trucks one for the both of us .... Not too mention the house was fully furnished. Now i spend my time as an engineer making 110k+ again for the past 3 years .... All with no college exp what so ever. Enjoying life that God has blessed me with.

What was your degree in? Maybe thats the problem. My job absolutely cared that I had my degree.

Depends on your perception of useless. Can many of the careers be done just fine without one? Absolutely. So from that perspective, your point stands. However, a lack of a degree will close a lot of doors at the beginning, and establish a much lower ceiling over all (shit, half my current class is only there because they couldn't go any further in their careers with out that piece of paper). According to one of my professors, a degree isn't about teaching you to do a job anyway. It's about teaching you critical thinking, while applying it to a specific career.

The degree either gets you 'overqualified,' which is code for they think your going to jump ship 10 seconds after joining them or 'you need more experience.' The first one is BS, the second one is generally true. Just get your foot in the door somewhere and your degree will pay off in the long term... you will eventually go higher than the colleagues who do not have one.

Oh wow, $16 an hour. Must be loaded. The joke is I make about that much and can't really support myself on it. To be fair though, the cost of living in my area is pretty high. After 6 years of thinking college is relatively useless, I'm starting to think otherwise. I went the whole "carve your own path" route, gained experience in a field, and applied for higher ranking jobs. I'm at about the end of the chain here, the only options I have are to become a celebrity in this field, start my own business, or go to college. I'm thinking going to college and getting a degree in something I actually have an ounce of interest in (with a good job market) is my best bet. That isn't to say that the system isn't messed up in a way, but you know, meh. It isn't exactly easy doing it with no college education. Some people get lucky, others have to work hard, which is essentially the same thing as college.

I have Bachelors in Graphic Design. Got a full-time salary position in DC, 6 months after graduation. Most companies I know only look at resumes that have college degree. Just because they don't talk to you about it, doesn't mean that they don't acknowledge it. It serves more as a way to filter out resumes. If you don't have a degree, you don't get an interview. (At least this was my experience)

No convenience store? Didn't bother volunteering at the animal shelter or local school? Organize an event to clean up a local beach or park? You didn't get an internship that related to your major? How did you make it this far in life with [b]zero [/b]work experience? And now you expect employers to go "yes, let's hire this guy who has literally never had a job before"? Again, the problem isn't higher education, it's your expectations. Are there issues with higher education and the number of people getting degrees they don't need? Yes, but that's a different issue.

5 RepliesShit I got $20+ a hour as a plumbing apprentice. That's STARTING pay. All I had was a high school diploma. That was doing the construction part of plumbing, I didn't have to go near any dookie the whole time I was there. No debt, starting pay is more than most college graduates (at least at this time) and they pay for your schooling. It's not like plumbing is the only option for a deal like that either; almost any trade has that deal.

The entire school program is designed to tell you that college is the next step when you are done with traditional school, but for most students it really isn't and there is really nothing in place to promote alternatives. As a result of this, hundreds of thousands of people enter adult hood with crippling debt and an employment situation that just doesn't have room for them.
