Had this idea the other day, there are only 2 types of heavy weapon currently and it seems a bit limiting. A lot of people have suggested railguns but tbh they're not much more than a hybrid of rocket launchers and fusion rifles, I want to have something completely unique.
Enter the flamethrower, a short range but incredibly powerful weapon that deals heavy dps. I was trying to think of a word other than flame cause that makes it sound exclusively solar but i couldn't think of anything that sounded good (any ideas?) The gun would spew out flaming globs of a particular element, akin to the halo 3 flamethrower, that deal DoT on targets. This damage would stack to discourage burst firing.
Stats:
Range: How far the flames travel before dissipating - Generally quite short, maybe a bit further than UR's effective range.
*Burn damage: How much the DoT does per tick - Can vary considerably depending on the weapon.
*Burn duration: How long the DoT lasts - Also variable, probably between 2-6 seconds.
Stability: Slightly different to other weapons, flamethrowers shake from side to side rather than having traditional recoil.
Reload: No change, simply how fast the weapon reloads.
Magazine: How much fuel is in a canister - Very high, enough for around 5 seconds of sustained fire.
*Notes:
Burn damage and burn duration are akin to RoF and impact in that as one increases the other decreases.
No RoF or impact to keep the focus on the DoT (and because I ran out of stats spaces (>_<)
Perk ideas: (Come up with your own, I'll add them to the list!)
Wall of flame - Flames attach to floors/walls and continue burning for several seconds.
Magnesium burners - Enemies hit by the weapon are temporarily blinded.
Napalm Adhesive - Enemies on fire can spread it to others via physical contact.
Unstable Elements - Enemies killed by the weapon explode.
Aggregation - Aiming allows charged shots to be fired for more range. Shots explode on impact dealing damage based on charge and a standard burn equal to the burn damage of the normal attacks. - Pyrowolf
I think this would make a great CQC heavy weapon, as neither rockets nor MGs fill this niche particularly well. It could also be used as a tactical weapon, perhaps to keep enemy shields down or block off corridors. Everyone post their thoughts, lets see if we can get bungie to notice this!
Disclaimer: Flamethrowers can be any element, not just solar. Just change the colour of the flames and there you have it!

Call them projectors instead of flamethrowers

There was a Flamethrower in Marathon. It Was stupidly OP. http://marathongame.wikia.com/wiki/TOZT-7_Backpack_Napalm_Unit

I believe that all of the perks are good, but these perks are more of a subclass abilities. Forming walls is a little overpowered. If they do put it in they need to put a BIG nerf on it

Dude this is a really cool idea. Sadly bungie will not listen. I do have an idea for an exotic perk. The idea is called ward of flame. When shooting the weapon shoots in a wave forward like a wall. This wall blocks all bullets grenades bounce off and armor piercing shots do not penetrate. This includes golden gun and nova bomb. However taking this perk completely kills damage and range. This could only be used defensively. This also adds a much needed layer of strategy to the game of choosing when to deploy this wall do you deploy on a spot where sniper's normally shoot or maybe a titan deploying it while running up to shoulder charge. Bump if you agree.

Sweet idea

Shoulder-fired fusion cannon would be cooler and more fitting for this universe
-
Not a good idea to be honest that would suck
-
a flamethrower is not very unique at all...
-
Nice idea! I like it! I imagine it would burn through shields like a hot knife through butter. I'd love to see this in the game! Perfect against thralls and similar!
-
Nope, can't be done. I'll tell you what can be done though! We removed the rare occurrence where Crota is unable to summon his Oversoul! Your pal, DeeJ

Thats a good idea. I would like to see grenade launchers as a heavy weapon. Basically a machine gun, but fires a certain type of grenade based upon the particular gun. Ex: a launcher that shot solar flare grenades.

Wouldn't mind to see some kind of dual wield pistols without aiming. Flamethrower is indeed a great idea. Ex. Auto rifle with attached grenade launcher would be fun too. What about some Hand cannons with magazine. Winchester rifle with armor piercing bullets. Man there is a lot what they could do.

The weapon the game really needs is a grenade launcher. As a third weapon type in the heavy weapon slot.

Edited by Pyrowo1f: 2/7/2015 1:05:57 AMSuggestion for name: Energy projector Grimoire generic item description: In the wake of the Golden Age, the easiest method of doing a lot of damage was to simply fire concentrated bursts or streams of an element. The technology has been relatively unchanged since.

Lightthrower I particularly like the "Aggregation" perk idea. Makes it sound like a grenade launcher.
-
I would like to see a grenade launcher, rail gun, mini gun
-
How about beam cannons solor equals flamethrower arc chain lighning and void think Ghostbusters style
-
-
I'd love to get my hands on one of these. I'm one of the proud few who use shotguns in pve.

Alternative name: Plasma Torch/Plasma Thrower. Plasma, as an ionized gas would still conform to the essential movement requirement of a flame thrower, could be different elemental damagetypes, fits in with the general sci-fi theme, and would justify it weighing less/faster movement than a standard heavy weapon which would be essential for a close range heavy weapon. That said I don't think its a good idea as shotguns and fusion rifles are plenty dominant at close range, and as a PvP focused player I'd like some more content geared towards more mid to long range combat. Haven't had a chance to use any of my scout rifles in ages!

Your awesome your better than people who work on the game very good idea

That would be b.a. for sure. They could make it work
