Sorry for the lateness all, here's the next part in our story!
Part 8: A New Home
Matthew knew how Fallen technology worked from his studies with Saliks, but he never knew how it would feel to travel on or inside of one. As the Skiff went into stealth, Matthew was able to see through a slit in the hatch of the ship covered by a glass-like material.
At first his senses told him he was falling and became slightly dizzy at the amount of height between him and the ground, but he soon shook himself out of it, and took another look through the glass.
As the Fallen Skiff rose into the atmosphere Matthew could see the Earth below him grow smaller and smaller as they traveled further and further away, into orbit of the planet.
After a few minutes Matthew heard two knocks on the metal between him and Saliks. Matthew returned the two knocks to let Saliks know he was okay.
Suddenly, after a few minutes of Matthew looking at the Earth slowly spinning beneath them, the engine revved and they began travelling even further away from Earth. Matthew took one last look at his home, before his eyes began to grow heavy, eventually lulled to sleep by the pod-like space and the hum of the Fallen engine.
Matthew woke with a start. He heard Saliks knocking on the metal between them. Matthew returned the knock.
He pressed his face against the slit in the hatch to see ahead of them. What he saw was a giant ship, made practically out of scrap welded together. A Ketch. It lazily moved in orbit as their Skiff got closer and closer to it. Seeing this monstrosity of a ship began to worry Matthew. What if he were caught? He would be killed right on the spot, or worse.
The sound of the engines slowing down snapped him out of his worry.
“It’s okay. Saliks said you’d be fine.” Matthew told himself.
He went over the basic Fallen he learned when Saliks attempted to teach him the Fallen’s tongue, but before he could be sure he remembered all of it, a distinct hissing noise sounded. The hatch became unlocked and began to open as the hook extended.
Matthew clutched onto it and tried not to lose his balance, but he began to wobble. He managed to catch his balance at the last moment right before the hook was fully extended. He looked to his left and saw Saliks, and to his right he saw another Fallen Vandal. Both Saliks and the other Vandal took the same position on the hook, and Matthew attempted to copy it. Just then, the Fallen leaped off the hooks, and Matthew followed in suit.
Matthew landed to the ground on his hands and feet, but the others landed on just their feet and brushed it off as if it were nothing. He quickly got up and he silently sighed in relief as nobody seemed to notice.
He looked around the area which they were dropped off on.
It looked like one half junk yard and one half landing bay. He guessed it was the latter.
Dregs were fighting over a piece of scrap in the corner of the bay, there seemed to be piles of bronze-like metal laying everywhere, and battle worn ships came in and out of stealth as they landed for repairs from recent battles.
Matthew looked over to Saliks who was looking back at Matthew from the corners of his four eyes. A Fallen Vandal barked an order to the troop, and the Fallen began to move. Matthew followed, and all seemed to be well.
Then things got bad.
