Bungie made it so crota would do that if you didn't move fast enough. That is the reason you either A. Go the other way, B. Just drop into the tower below the boomers and hop on a door, or C. Drop back onto that rock and then down into the hole in the corner, nothing can see you or hit you so you're safe.

You always want to head back to the crystal room the opposite route Crota takes because once he's in motion and focused on you (which is likely if you're taking that path just as he's rotating that way), he'll pretty much follow you to the ends of the earth until you're dead.
