During the Hard Crota's End and about hour 6 I think it was. I had nothing but time to stare at the level as I was working on some strategies. Then I looked up like I do many times during an occasional Oversoul and wondered what exactly that large broken moon with an soul looking like core really was. So the best logic is this is actually Oryx the father of Crota. The last ability that Oryx had was to be held in a special environment where Crota also lies in s semi spiritual magic type plain. The unreal power that kills us it what remains of Oryx and Crota uses his power to use it. Still working on why it looks like a broken moon and can only imagine we are actually in the middle of the moon's core. So any ideas to support this or maybe just consider it a community fact?
Edit: Fixed Orynx to Oryx

remember the shrine of oryx mission where you fight a giant green night that looks like crota and then you need to destroy the communication sphere to end the level.http://oyster.ignimgs.com/mediawiki/apis.ign.com/destiny/2/23/Moon_Story_Grimoire_Shrine_of_Oryx.jpg. dingle bot says the big sphere in croats end is communicating. we also see another big sphere at the tower. it is entirely possible what you are saying is correct and that oryx is the giant sphere. if we accept this to be true, then we can accept that oryx is possibly a traveler that belongs to the hive.

Not a bad theory. His name is "Oryx" though.
